Do you get the “I’m not sure this is the right number” whenever someone white calls you for the first time. And does this ever happen to white coworkers? Most all my clients are shocked when they hear my voice and think they called someone else. I ask my white coworkers and they never get told “Idk if this is the right number or not but..”.

    Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Can't leave out the clinical part because that gives us the ability to practice therapy and make diagnosis.

I’m a caseworker for state benefits. So basically people call me whenever they need help with their Medicaid, food stamps, cash assistance, etc. When I get a white client sometimes they assume I’m bias and I’m hit with “I guess I have to change my skin color to get food stamps” or “Guess I need to move to Detroit first” and other nonsensical stuff cause I’m black. It’s a pretty thankless job with a high turnover rate.

Word. I work in community mental health dealing with youth, so all of my clients are way different from yours. I don't deal with benefits at all. For me, it's usually my white co-workers struggle building a rapport with black kids or women that don't know what to do with males (especially black).

Def not only reason why I still work here is because we work from home and honestly I’m on autopilot.
There’s a huge section of Americans who are just really uneducated. Like not knowing what a zip code is as an adult? Not being able to answer basic questions? Getting confused whenever I use the term eligibility? It’s frustrating. I smoke at my desk literally every day because it keeps me calm enough to explain to these people and deal with all the BS.

Lol your acquaintance sounds like one of the recent grads we burnt through when covid hit. So many (mostly white women) quit because when they got here they wanted to make a difference and help with their upbeat positive attitude. And then first week they’re breaking down crying cause of all the stress and clients calling them stupid/out of their name because they still learning the job. Or then just getting frustrated having to explain basic concepts over and over and over.

I’m trying to move to the IT department ASAP since they’ll train me in house 😂.

Is the pay worth all that?

Pre pandemic the job was much better surprisingly. The office is super nice with a bunch of amenities, and all the old women there literally fed me everyday and I had all the hoes working there at my desk flirting with me it honestly reminded me of high school with all the petty rumors and people competing with one another to date other coworkers lmao. Now it’s kinda depressing getting straight out of bed and walking to the living room to tell people they’re not gonna be able to feed their kids this month cause their food stamps gone cause they didn’t fill out paperwork, or that they can’t get partials covered so that they themselves can eat normally.

The paid time off is good tho and the pay is honestly amazing to me because I have little student debt and have a non expensive apartment in a good part of the city, and the job is much more about mental toughness than technical abilities so I’m allowed to do soooo much inappropriate s*** while working from home. Only reasons why I’m staying for now.

Also my boss is this tall white women who’s ex husband was a farmer in Trinidad so she lets me get away with a lot cause she’s drawn to me because of my dreads. She clearly likes black guys but her current bf is white but she calls me “Mr” in my name before addressing me every time we speak. It’s super inappropriate how she says it in a sexual way but whatever lol. I accidentally called a client a b**** a few weeks ago because I thought she was muted. My boss found out and she pretended to care for the hire ups but then we just joked about it the next week when s*** like that can get you canned, makes the state look bad.

Sorry for the rant at work bored .

factoids. No corny s*** but I wear my s*** with pride because you don’t see dreads in a professional environment so I like breaking that negative stereotype.
