It’s funny to me how this type of thing was novel and cool in the 60s through 80s because not everyone could record music so “amateurish/ not good” music wasn’t made that often and blew people’s minds to hear lol. Dude is clearly just free styling, just about everyone I know grew up recording similar goofy rants over beats, searching for the next rhyme and losing control, like I know exactly what it sounds like

Not to say it’s trash but I tend to feel like this scene is over-intellectualized when it’s just mediocre white guys who had the resources to record their d*** induced ramblings. If recording was more accessible at the time, there would be a captain Beefheart on every street

    I prefer the Residents

there is definitely a point to this in how we in general look back on music even outside of this specific scope. lots of stuff which we look back on and give a lot of credit too likely wouldn't stand out now because the context they were released under almost matters more than the music itself in a vacuum

  • Love him. Some songs are better than others but I enjoy it all for the most part. Even the two albums people tend to hate on, Bluejeans & Moonbeams and Unconditionally Guaranteed; “Observatory Crest” and “Upon the My-Oh-My” are two of my favorite songs of his.

Definitely check out Howlin’ Wolf if you haven’t, as he’s the guy Beefheart totally ripped his voice from.

One aspect of his voice... Wolf is my blues goat but doesn't have Beefhearts range

Nah Beefheart was legit a genius, plus he put his band players through harsh practicing for months so they could record Trout Mask in one take.

The Beatles definitely come to mind. I still enjoy their music and it holds up, but all of the recording techniques that were explored with their albums definitely helped them stay so relevant for so long.

it's one of those weird things which spans two different ends of the spectrum; it's like more of a thing with either heavily cherished pop music (spanning pop-genres), and also really experimental older stuff. Music that falls in the middle doesn't seem to be subject to the same effect

The band is probably the best thing they had going from my view but it’s not like people are looking back at it talking about their playing for the most part, it’s more of just how weird and clever it is and everything. I don’t dislike the music at all but I just think the genius label is too far. It was just the right time for what he was doing to make an impact imo. I feel like the whole irony thing that they were all playing with at the time has kind of aged poorly and I always feel like I’m listening to obnoxious self satisfied hippies. Zappa is way worse with that though

I believe it was one day, not necessarily one take. I saw a documentary where Frank Zappa said they finished recording all of their parts it in about six hours, then Beefheart recorded all of the vocals with the headphones held up to one ear. Beefheart also composed Trout Mask on piano (even though he didn’t know how to play the piano) and would play the individual parts for the drummer so he could then transcribe them for the rest of the band.

Edit: Looked it up, and all of it was recorded in that one day except for “Hair Pie: Bake 1”, which was recorded in the house where they rehearsed the record, and “Moonlight on Vermont” and “Veteran’s Day Poppy”, which were recorded seven months before the rest of the album.
