I don't know much about political science academia/the field, but let me tell you that as long as you can keep your GPA above a 3.0 out of 4, it basically doesn't matter. that doesn't mean you shouldn't strive for more (more prestigious places will have a cut-off at 3.5), but don't stress out.

the factor that determines if you can get a job/internship and a GOOD one at that is your connections. talking to college recruiters, professors, smart peers, and keeping contact with them is the most important part about college. the GPA and classes are really secondhand.

going forward, just take your classes a little more seriously. do like 15 minutes of work, 5 minutes of play, until you've hit a quota of like 1 or 2 hours of work done. you can even space out how much work you do throughout the day since you have online classes. retake the class you got a 0 in, and if future employers question you about this period, just tell them truthfully that COVID really took a toll on you.

participate heavily in career fairs and recruitment events. even the most mundane boring s*** like dinners. the more recruiters recognize you, the more you'll be mentioned during the recruiting process.

this is from the mindset of an accounting major though. take it with a grain of salt.

Thank you brother!!! is building connections something I should start now, or should I save it for junior and senior year?

the toughest part about now is that it's hard to make quality connections since you can't meet folk face-to-face. I would 100% make a LinkedIn if you haven't and start connecting with people you know (make sure you send a note asking and thanking them).

recruiters will tend to ignore sophomores and freshmen, but there should be digital events reserved specifically for sophomores. ask your career center and see if you guys have some kinda college board i.e. Handshake. the key now is just to make your face recognizable and let hiring managers know that you're passionate to get working.

Y'all better hope curving comes through

I've been holding up as fine as I can. I think the main reason I'm not flat out failing any classes right now is because it's my last semester essentially. (1 more class next semester and I graduate)

Too close to the finish line

    we will make it brother.

  • Nov 15, 2020

when it first went online yea, had to change a class to credit / no credit last minute cause it was looking dicey. but this quarter going solid

If you haven’t, I recommend reaching out to professors about extensions for major assignments you are struggling to hit. Or ways to makeup material you might’ve missed. Maybe some of your instructors will be more flexible in the age of zoom academy. Personally, and especially as I teach a class that students have to pass to graduate, I’ve worked w my struggling students as long as they’ve reached out to explain that they are making an effort to pass

Really? How can I turn this around?

And I haven’t spoken to him yet, it’s so late in the semester I kinda feel like there’s no point

Nooooo you shoulda been done that bro

Its f***ing COVID teachers are understanding

Send him or her a fat email and say exactly that, that you thought there was no point but you don’t want this to hurt your record

Even if you can’t nullify the class it’s not the end of the world, but you should def try it’d make things a lot easier

If not then f*** it bro you have one 0. All that means is one more extra class you gotta take next year or senior year. Aint s*** bro you got this

    Woah your a college professor?

  • Nov 15, 2020

If it's just one semester or even year, you can't sweat it. Happens to the best of us.

If it's community College, you might dead ass be able to ask the prof if there's anyway for you to turn it around. Just be respectful and explain your situation. Make sure to reiterate that you don't expect anything just because you're asking and that you're merely wondering if it's possible.

Then again, if it's a hard class, you may as well say f*** it because there's no way you'll learn 2-3 months of material in this time frame.
