Nothing cliche about it at all.

I think Deftones gets the most love from this genre and I completely understand why, it’s like they don’t have that stigma around them.

Maybe, I think they did what they could to distance themselves from the genre but were never able to fully shake off the stigma. Chino is dying on that hill and still claims that they weren't ever Nu-Metal but it comes across as insecure and forced. I just want to put my hand on his shoulder and tell him "It's ok. It's nothing to be ashamed of, Chino." We all start somewhere.

The ironic part is that the jocks that were fans of their music are the same type that bullied nu-metal figures like Jonathan Davis and Chester Bennington in high school, so I understand why they would want to distance themselves from it. Chino's dissociation comes from a different place and it shouldn't even bother him like this anymore. He's made music that has saved lives and put a roof over his family's head. F*** what a measly critic labels your music.

Weird genre with a lot of bad records but it’s kind of proven itself to be the true rock music of the proletariat, and it was probably the first time we saw a lot of rock bands in the mainstream with members of color, even though the bands were all largely written off as white guys trying to act black.

I never listened to it in my life except deftones & random hits but I think it’s cooler than ever atm been considering actually checking out a couple albums lol
