Do the rappers who talk about overcoming street life and what it’s like to live in it count as conscious (Youngboy, Polo G, etc?)

Technically yes but gangsta rap always had those elements until it got too big.

Hopefully Domani, even though he’s slightly watered down Cole I’d prefer him over s*** like NBA and whatever else

  • May 6, 2021

Polo g just had a number 1 record

On the real, lyricism in hip hop is dead and it’s kind of sad. Not everything needs to be on some lyrical miracle s*** but we need some rappers in the mainstream who can actually rap.

    Its gonna come

  • May 6, 2021

COLE ISN'T A CONSCIOUS RAPPER LMAO

HE'S JUST A MEDICORE STORY TELLER

Yall don't really listen to what artists like Lil Baby or Polo G be saying? Conscious rap is safe with them and they don't rap over boom rap beats

    nba youngboy

Him too fr. Nigga gets conscious without ever being boring or relying on gimmicks and people write him off just based on his image

He’s gonna be 30 this month. I feel like he missed his chance to be mainstream

The XV of this generation so sad

Nah because they resort to violence and nihilism

  • May 6, 2021

I think niggas that fill that lane realized what they have to do to succeed in the mainstream space and aren’t willing to take that route bc they feel it’s not worth it

Not bad but he gotta work on his rapping voice & I think him coming from a rich family will make it hard for him cause he don't got an interesting story that people will be able to relate to maybe I'm wrong tho

“ overcoming street life and what it’s like to live in it” is a thematic trope that exists in ALL faucets of hip hop music even in the female rap scene regardless if you’re a cardi b or rhapsody.. if that was the defining aspect of conscious rap music then you might as well include Wayne the duffle bag boy, drake the sheltered simp and Jay the braggadocios mogul as ‘conscious’ as well.. almost all rappers are conscious to a degree because of the socio-economic disparities of our communities thAt depict the music m. Meaning that there will always be SOME sort of social activism/black liberation because of how we’re juxtaposed to other groups on the caste system. Ya’ll not even discussing variables that identify the artists as conscious to begin with..
