Landlords profit off of poverty and destitution by commoditising a basic human right and offering it in return for most of the money people work for. Parasitically leeching off of people’s need to have a roof over their head isn’t defensible. It’s literally a no-lose way of generating wealth and income which is only accessible to people with wealth in the first instance.

Even arguments like "they handle maintenance" completely fall apart because it would legit be cheaper if everyone just pooled their rent money together and used that to handle general maintenance costs, and then instead of having someone skim off the top, you can use the extra money for improvements and upgrades.

No it wouldnt be cheaper. At all, anyway just make the argument to your politicians.

If you didnt have a landlord, all else the same, you would not be living in that 4x4 room.

You would most likely not afford to pay for all of the amenities and liabilities. On its face this idea doesnt even make sense. You wouldnt have the income to make upgrades without a landlord subsidizing your living

You are better off just asking politicians for free housing and to drastically reduce ones ability to be a landlord then gawk at people for trying to get a passive income in a world where renting is a thing.

Tenants can come together and pool their resources and do exactly what you’re suggesting. There’s nothing keeping them from doing that. They could all come together and buy their own property, and pool together for all repairs and maintenances.

It’s certainly possible it just isn’t all that practical. You’d have to find long term tenants with enough disposable income to cover upfront costs, you’d have to have somebody designated to be in charge of organizing maintenance (which would be difficult since all these people presumably have other jobs).

The big kicker is that mobility would be a lot harder for everyone involved. Many people rent because they are somewhere they don’t intend to be forever (I rented while I was in college, people rent while they are between houses, or while they’re working in a city that they don’t plan to live in forever). Any member of the commune that moves out eventually would be f***ed because they put their money in upfront and have a loan for the mortgage partially in their name, tying up their credit for when they want to buy a new place. Do they get their initial investment back? Does everybody’s mortgage payments go up? Or do they find a new tenant and charge them more so they can pay back the original tenant, in turn all becoming filthy f***ing landlords themselves?

send the people out of work the money to pay it then

    for what?

    the tenant said “cancel”

    the f***?

sure it’s reasonable to postpone rent, work out a payment plan

but to straight up cancel? why would someone let a stranger stay in their house for free?

unemployment in my state gets $600 extra every week. & there’s plenty of essential jobs listed.

    PRIVATE PROPERTY IS THEFT

Because I base my views on facts and not anecdotal evidence lol? Most landlords are just ordinary investors seeking a source of passive income to supplement their day jobs. Only a minority are as you described.

Landlords aren't gonna give you a cut of their income.

    F*** landlords

  • There are people who realistically, can still afford to pay their rent on time, and even in advance, as they are working from home. And in the case of NJ/NY residents who normally commute but now don't have to as they can work from home, they really stop screaming about canceling rent. They are saving more money than ever by not having to pay for MTA, NJTransit, or PATH services. Saving on gas and Uber/Lyft money too. Not having to get their daily lunch and/or coffee or whatever. Saving by not going out every night. These are the people who can afford paying rent.

The whole "cancel rent" thing should be for the people who clearly cannot afford to pay their rent as they were either laid off, or not able to work currently during this pandemic. I feel like people have forgotten that, and jumped in on the cancel rent train as a means for them to just get out of paying rent when they've always been able to.
