Based on the definition of art ,rap is art . So a rapper would be an artist .

    Art -
the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

that’s a different question, also he changed op. the way he first framed it was disrespectful like tryna be like “why do we call street rap, artists?”

it’s cool if that’s the question, but it’s dishonest to act like the first question isn’t a little weird.

i’m def the reactionary type, so maybe op has good will but the original post did rub me the wrong way

Oh lmao I did not see it before the edit yeah that sounds sus

There’s two categories the “rapper vs artist” argument falls under:

    • looking at rap/hiphop as a lesser genre out of (racially motivated) elitism
    • drawing a line between great rappers and rappers who have made great music but don’t fit a certain standard for an ideal rapper (ie ghostwriting, or not being super lyrical)

These two may get conflated and someone who believes one may be accused of believing the other. But what’s funny about the second category is: we assume it comes from a place of looking down on “standardized” rappers (Jay/Nas/Black Thought etc), but it actually stems from inclusivity for rappers who don’t fit that standard but make great music

There's also just comparing lyrical ability vs the music as a whole.

Lupe's a better rapper than Kanye, but Kanye's the greatest artist.

It's the same thing as saying The Weeknd is a better artist/makes better music than __, but ___ is a better singer.

Yep this is what the second point is about. I see why we’re getting caught in the terms and getting our wires mixed in this thread but it comes down to lyrical vs music as a whole

    Rappers ARE artists
