News updates covering the targeted attacks on North Carolina substations that have left ~40,000 without power

This was a coordinated attack. Two different substations were hit with gunfire at the same time. Millions of dollars in damage has been done, and power will likely not be restored until Thursday.

A state of emergency has been called, and with it a curfew.

In this first post, I will be covering the news updates. In the second post in this thread, I will post current theories and speculation

Update: December 8th, 2022 - Attempted Shooting at Power Plant in South Carolina

An individual opened fire near a Duke Energy facility at Wateree Hydro Station in Ridgeway, South Carolina, on Wednesday, CBS News has learned.

According to multiple sources, the individual pulled up in a truck outside the facility around 5:30 p.m. ET before opening fire, using what appeared to be a long gun, and then speeding away. Several Duke Energy employees witnessed the event. No one was injured. It was not immediately clear how many people were in the truck.

    Update: December 5th, 2022 - FBI Involved

With no suspects or motive announced, the FBI is joining the investigation into power outages in a North Carolina county believed to have been caused by “intentional” and “targeted” attacks on substations that left around 40,000 customers in the dark Saturday night, prompting a curfew and emergency declaration.

The mass outage in Moore County turned into a criminal investigation when responding utility crews found signs of potential vandalism of equipment at different sites – including two substations that had been damaged by gunfire, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

Power is not expected to be restored until Thursday

Possibility that this was a right wing, domestic terror attack

Theories that it may be related to drag show protests emerge

Information Provided: On December 3 at 7:51 pm, an outage was reported at a 115 kV Substation. Technicians were dispatched to the site and identified what appeared to be gunfire damage to the transformer cooling fins and circuit breakers. The Moore County Sherriff’s office was contacted and were dispatched to the site. At 8:28 pm, a second outage was reported at a 230 kV Substation approximately 10 miles away. Technicians were dispatched to the site and identified what appeared to be gunfire damage to the transformer cooling fins and circuit breakers. Due to the damage to the 230 kV substation, five additional 115 kV substations were powered down causing an outage to approximately 42,000 customers. No potential sabotage was identified at the additional five 115 kV substations Subsequent investigations at the damaged 230 kV substation found 27 .223 caliber/5.56 mm bullet casings outside the substation perimeter. Five .223 caliber/5.56 mm bullet casings were found outside the damaged...

this is actually currently seeming a lot bigger and more coordinated than that

two different substations, in different locations, were hit at the same time

added a tweet to the second post of this thread; a theory is that is may be some right wing extremists group due to a drag show. these type of attacks have actually been planned and talked about for years

Yeah it’s probably the right or some foreign enemy.

The only way a leftist could have done it out of political motivation is if it was in retaliation with the whole womens rights being attacked.

Other than that, left doesn’t really have motive to be doing things like this.

Seems more right wing extremist or Foreign enemy based.

yeah and from what i’ve read so far, attacking these power substations has actually been talked about in right wing extremist circles for years.

some have been arrested in the past for planning to do something exactly like this

This how they’d shut the country down

A lot of suburban and rural public works stations for energy, water etc lack strong cyber security and can be easily targeted

It would take a lot more effort to do the whole country like this. Not to mention, this incident will lead to the beefing up cyber security and physical security measures across the board. I guess sometimes small things need to happen to prevent bigger and worse things from happening.

looking like this was a response to something, current theory is that it was a right wing extremist group acting due to a drag show that was being held in the county. this isn’t confirmed yet though

but it was definitely coordinated. the individuals knew what they were doing. they had to know exactly which parts to hit to take the stations down

  • Kinda scary ngl hope everyone is safe

yeah i agree. even though this was done by gunfire cyber security absolutely needs to be beefed up at these places. and now looks like physical security as well

My guess would be the media coverage would be the overall motivation. If it “”were”” to be done in concert with the Columbus stuff then suddenly the existence of a large and organized right wing shock troop type militia then becomes the narrative, potentially emboldening peripheral groups and drawing in new recruits to the “””””””cause”””””””

  • Dec 5, 2022

  • Damn they’re not gonna have power for close to a year if they irreparably damaged any HV transformers

  • Dec 5, 2022

so why people talking about cyber security hot pancakes

i think because these places are susceptible to cyber attacks as well, so the lack of security in the event of a physical attack like this one leads to concerns of cyber attacks as well. they are way to vulnerable for how important they are
