feel like its basically all but guaranteed that it's a rw extremist group (whether directly or at least in terms of influence). if you've even remotely seen the discourse in these circles, the whole "target the power grids" thing has been a meme for years. there was a "meme" after the 2020 election which was just a list of coordinates of all power grids in the north east condensed into a singular "ironic" image it could be something else realistically but i would highly doubt it given the coincidence

that’s the current theory lol. the theory is they were doing it in response to a drag show

Surely it has to be more than a drag show right? if the army person from Jan 6 might be involved then maybe it’s more about that

FBI still wont take em seriously but if blm protestors stand on the street they lose their s***

Nah, they definitely will. We get EISAC emails and warnings just for people taking pictures of substations. Electric Grid security has been a pretty hot topic in distribution for the past few years.

They make and have mobile transformers. We use them all the time when we rebuild substations. People shouldn’t be out for days if it was just an issue at the sub.

    More info:

Information Provided: On December 3 at 7:51 pm, an outage was reported at a 115 kV Substation. Technicians were dispatched to the site and identified what appeared to be gunfire damage to the transformer cooling fins and circuit breakers. The Moore County Sherriff’s office was contacted and were dispatched to the site. At 8:28 pm, a second outage was reported at a 230 kV Substation approximately 10 miles away. Technicians were dispatched to the site and identified what appeared to be gunfire damage to the transformer cooling fins and circuit breakers. Due to the damage to the 230 kV substation, five additional 115 kV substations were powered down causing an outage to approximately 42,000 customers. No potential sabotage was identified at the additional five 115 kV substations Subsequent investigations at the damaged 230 kV substation found 27 .223 caliber/5.56 mm bullet casings outside the substation perimeter. Five .223 caliber/5.56 mm bullet casings were found outside the damaged...

oh yeah certainly looks like a right wing extremist type of attack, especially considering they’ve been talking about these since 2016, i think some even have gotten arrested for plotting similar attacks in the past lol

  • I remember a very similar incident happening in 2013, where snipers attacked a power structure in Metcalf, though little long term damage occured; en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metcalf_sniper_attack

I wonder if the same group is responsible and what their motive is. In Metcalf they recovered Russian bullet casings, but this could be an attempt at misdirection since Russian ammo is widely available in the US.

It could be American extremists, and if it is, it could be a dry run for further guerrilla sabotage. Whether they are rightist or leftist, it is a profoundly stupid plan -- attacking critical power grids is an excellent way to turn the every side of the public against you.

yeah and from what i’ve read so far, attacking these power substations has actually been talked about in right wing extremist circles for years.

some have been arrested in the past for planning to do something exactly like this

    it has been for decades

it’s literally a central part of the plot of the influential white supremacist novel “The Turner Diaries” as well as more contemporary white supremacist literature calling for collapse

basically, the premise is that people use power outages to sow fear and civil unrest and to use that to start a genocidal race war in which a white utopian ethnostate would be won
