They are a bit over hated

He's one of the progenitors of the "so bad it's good" kneejerk reputation these movies get, almost moreso from mortal Kombat than resident evil imo

They made money tho which is all that matters I guess, they just fizzled out financially and critically over time

I mean he is coming off Oscar nominations . A more intimate story with smaller budget . Practical effects is the move . He isn’t that crazy of an experiment .

I imagine that some of the most respected directors just generally don’t want to do franchise movies. Not that Capcom and studios don’t want acclaimed directors.

The big directors that consistently get critical praise like a Nolan, Peele, Coogler, Villeneuve, etc. probably just have zero interest in working on movies that aren’t their own ideas. If one of them were to consider making a film in adaptation of a popular thing, it has to be something they WANT to do.

So because the top tier directors don’t want to work on adaptations like this the only other option is usually a so-so director, a hit of miss director, or a yes-man director. This may have just been the only time things aligned where the prestigious director was actually interested in making a Resident Evil movi3 when he was approached.

Nah, a lot of his stuff was for kids but had an edge. I loved Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 and Resident Evil and AvP growing up. He's considered a vulgar auteur like Bay with a music video adjacent visual style. People actually earnestly liked Pompeii if you've ever seen that one.

He didn't really jump the shark until around Resident Evil 4. He started using the volume to film everything and now his s*** sucks though.

Not too many horror movies are filmed for IMAX. Premium screens are $$$. Resident Evil also has global appeal. Should easily be the biggest one

I don’t speculate awards too much before seeing movies . My main 1st goal is I enjoy it and don’t get spoiled on movies . Rest we kind of wait and see . Wish there was a specific horror category for Oscar’s
