The series only really takes itself seriously during 2, 7, and 8 not counting spinoffs. 3-6 is an action survival horror that is much more light hearted than the first two.

The point is that the series itself has had multiple tones throughout its history.

And the jokes weren’t all lines, it’s situational comedy. This character is not supposed to be some badass STARS member.

The only way I think we get a straight up HORROR RE movie is if they do 7 and that’s probably it.

They could go ahead and adapt 2 now (even though I think they could start with 1). Cregger could leave, attach his name on it as a producer (or even write it as a “fuck you” to the people bagging on him over not adapting the game in the first place) and someone else could come direct.

To me, this film is what happens in one of those side stories you learn about when finding a note or audio recording. And that’s cool af imo
