    okay

But part of me personally would have preferred to see humans with their own backstory who got mutated but part of their humanity was still there that lead to the main character ( player) learning the themes of the lesson they were being taught. There were glimpses there but leaning more into it for me would have helped more .

I feel now obviously that was unrealistic expectations. But that for me would earn the high ratings and if done well make it highly rewatchable.

The more I think about it the more I think Cregger was more literal about trying reconstruct a play through of RE than I thought, in a sort of meta way that loops back into the film itself.

When you think about this movie as being akin to a first time ever play through of RE a lot of things click, for instance, having original monsters as opposed to established ones.

When you’re playing RE2 back in ‘98 with no context whatsoever, the first time you encounter a Licker, for example, you know pretty much nothing about it. What it’s capable of, what its attack patterns are, the best way to deal with it. You don’t know about the sound sensitivity mechanic, you probably just unload on it only to suddenly die in one or two swipes.

Now, if this movie was predominantly established creatures, you’d have a better idea of what expect and how to tackle it, but by having them be original monsters as opposed to the more known, you can then recreate that uncertainty you’d have playing the game for the first time ever.

The truth of the matter is, in an era where every movie needs every character to have an emotional core or backstory (especially in the horror genre atm) and weighty themes, this movie stands out even more by eschewing all of those.

It’s also another case of intent, because we know Cregger could’ve done that if he wanted to, but he didn’t, except for the final monster, which was kind of exactly that.

Yes he feels like a streamer the entire movie . Someone streaming the game or the experience because he will say out loud his realizations, bullets, keys, locks and "oh they can die". All throughout the moive. With some of the set piece and zombies he encounters mainly the ones we see in trailer of sewer and falling zombies set pieces kind of just like "okay" to me.

But it tries to have an emotional core and backstory. It kind of just half steps it though

The girlfriend plot line dealing with forming a family . Him telling her she would be a good mom . Him wanting to stay alive and not telling others he is infected in hopes they cure him to see his daughter . The monsters all being representative of a family unit . Literally going in a maternity ward . Can you be for real for a moment . It’s not often kids are killed on camera in a movie of you feel nothing when a child is shot in the head I worry about your sanity

Yeah left 4 dead in many ways would have been better to adapt while alllwee him the same overall creative freedom . With a chiller fanbase too .

Now I’m being told there is no emotional story in a movie that starts off with him having a pro choice discussion . He blows a little girl head smooth off . Then directly says he loves children

I think the whole movie begins to go down hill when he shoots the girls head off and gets bitten . When in reality after that moment I was like holy s\*\*\* yall going crazy there is a lot you could do with this controversial decision to make in a horror movie . It’s rare you see kids or dogs harmed in horror movies and for good reason . Yet it feels if anything the humor got even worse after that moment. It could be because I don’t take killing kids lightly in media for many reasons but goodness

the zombie babies in the maternity ward in an umbrella facility even having a maternity ward was all just a coincidence . That he had to stop on the 24th floor and go through that room and only that room no other room

I get loving the movie I get yall cregger fans . I get hating the fervent game fans who are unreasonable . But some of you are being intellectually dishonest when this movie didn’t need to be called resident evil to accomplish its same story . It truly didn’t . The idea of searching in a house , finding ammo , a typewriter when the soul of the game is more than that or rapid fire jokes .

  • Sep 19

Truth be told it didn’t need to be set in modern times either because no part of modern times was fully utilized . I get it was easier to film in modern times though. It feels like he rage baited the core fans who saw writing and production budget invested in resident evil for the first tier time . A PlayStation picture from an Oscar nominated director .

Again even with the premise of “ this isn’t an action star this is someone who played the games living it in reality “ there is so much you could do with it which is why I was in . I don’t think this pulled it off and again without cregger name or resident evil name I think people would be honest about this movie
