This was fire. Zach’s dumbest yet out of his 3. He’s brilliant at dumb fun more than he is with the metaphors and messaging. He should do more dumb fun like this.
Dumb fun director
It’s mean? He didn’t understand the stakes? For f***s sake
The lighting here was top notch. It really felt so dark and spooky
Gene’s opinions when it comes to writing can be pretty iffy tbh.
Don’t really understand per se how the movie has a “mean streak”, if anyone is presented with active disdain it’s Umbrella, with Umbrella’s constant incompetence costing Bryan everything.
Even the scene where he’s having a genuine moment, pouring his heart out to his girlfriend is hijacked by Umbrella who clearly don’t give a single s\*\*\* about what he’s gone through to ultimately cover their asses.
I could see how this film could be perceived as a bit nihilistic to a degree, sure, but it absolutely has a target in mind for people to direct their anger toward, it’s not all for naught. Bryan is one of many of the poor b******s caught up in their mess.
A tragic story isn’t mean.
film was absolutely gorgeous in IMAX
lol feel like this is an overreaction it didn’t take me out of the scene at all

I didn't think it was worth it but I got it for $5 so f*** it

https://twitter.com/thebizarrestar/status/2102611694652739789While it does function as a joke, I think that’s a byproduct from what it’s true intention is; a moment where Bryan finally makes his decision and tries to have a moment all to himself, only for it to be undermined by Umbrella hijacking it.
It’s actually kind of brilliant. A moment of broad humor with a subtext of dark humor.
Like the movie. Didn't have a problem with the ending except the dude with the cure just charging for like 2 minutes instead of jabbing him right away.
get the loser outta here

When I rank cregger 3rd acts / endings I don’t know how I place it
Make a Resident Evil that the main character is just a gamer though I would play that
Start the game off they get stressed and cant aim for s***
Seeing HOPE weeks before this made this a more critical watch. HOPE again feels so Resident Evil. Perfect level of action hero, quips ,darkness, humanity. tension. Yes it is also an arubpt ending. HOPE will get a fraction of the success without the IP attached to its name. With subtitles attached to it and already limited showings. There are benefits from being a funny white guy people like to the point people are already comparing Cregger to Jordan Peele.
Part of the story purpose is not all of us can be the Leon S Kennedy. Not all of us are the action star or "main character"cough maxine and even when she is she dies trying to save others. Trying to save others is the doom of most people in this movie Bryan, Maxine, Police officer and scientist in a way.
some of us are the NPC they read about later. The only thing is I think the themes and story could be executed without so many characters being dumb. I think the same story or close to it would be improved by the characters acting a bit smarter. Pushing themselves to the limits and still struggling against the dark reality. To me that is also more realistic to both our reality and is in many way darker. That no matter how smart we are. No matter our determination sometimes we will face a darkness it feels like we cannot defeat. Sometimes fears will feel unsurmountable. We won't always find ammo, know where to go next , be able to outrun our demons.
I do think its a good discussion because he was in regardless just thinking it was delivery of an organ. To most logically after seeing the beginning monsters they would drive home but he choose to keep going. Yes part of it was for the money and to avoid the discussion of growing up. But he is a story of a character that loses his soul to a corporatoin while being underpaid (postmates) . The highly paid workers at Umbrella are bumbling fools . That are cowards at approaching a monster ( even if newly formed). He was able to approach and walk towards the monsters by the end.
|} Genes reasons for thinking it was mean spiritied is from thinking the movie was nihilistic in some ways of thinking Bryan should overcome darkness. I do like the Shadow of the Colossus like ending. Just the love story and connection to humanity by the end for Bryan was so devoid. He was always on a suicide mission but by the end in many ways it felt like he wanted to die more than be a father. ||
