What would you consider Drake? He just a Rap/Hip-Hop artist. That’s what Travis would be or just “mainstream rap” but that term is very wide, so they just another Rap artist. Carti I would call a Soundcloud rapper 🤷🏽‍♂️ But that’s more of a personal sub-genre I got 🤷🏽‍♂️

Mainstream rap same as Kendrick Lamar , J cole

You forgetting a lot of KTT posters are just Hip-Hop “fans” it’s just another music genre to them, probably not even their favorite one

It’s different when you are raised in Hip Hop culture

Fax, thats what separates me from liking certain rappers, I grew up hip hop, I am hip hop, but of course I incorporate other elements of cultures. I dont like it when its the other way around, when people in a way "gentrify" hip hop culture or appropriate it

Ehhh. I mean rock did it for 50 years I’m sure hip hop could do it aswell. I immediately know what type of artist and genre of rap they make instantly off hearing 2-3 of their songs

only problem with this is that we're producing new genres too fast and too furious to label.

cloud rap drill ( chicago now new york) mumble rap happy rap
trap, "trap" EDM trap, emo rap, . . . ringtone rap,(it keeps going)

it would be alright if the subgenre's got some time to actually distinguish themselves and their fanbases for a decade but
    we're chasing hits.

Everything I've heard is absolutely trash to my ears and reeks of cringe. But I'm ngl if someone likes it that's fine , they have their own opinion and taste. I just think its weird if full fledged adults listening to it and have that app

    Playboi Carti
    Travis Scott
    Post Malone
    Migos
    Cardi B

I can keep naming a bunch but I don't want to piss people off. They arent bad artists but just their main demographic is definitely the "yeah I listen to all these guys I have a great taste in rap" tier people aka white high school kids, and people who are surface tier casuals

Hmmmmm true. But metal did that. Btw metal has like over 50 sub genres and rock has quite a few aswell. With rap I think we have a few core actual sub genres

    Conscious Rap
    Street Rap
    Melodic/Mumble Rap
    Lyrical Rap
    Drill Rap
    Pop Rap(mainstream to the max)
    Alternative or expirmental rap

What’s mainstream right now is the melodic/mumble rap or just very fun songs over trap beats. Also street rap has a strong core on YouTube aswell. I don’t think where
Moving tooo fast being the last genre of rap we got was mumble/melody in 2016 and it seems like NY bringing drill back a little. If we had sub genres being on paper it wouldn’t be as much arguments and OGs and old heads saying “hip hop dead” “these kids don’t like bars” etc.

  • I like that we're having these discussions though, cause it puts things in perspective, some of us really care about the culture, and it shows we are getting smarter as minorities, we have to take ownership of our creations so we can be the ones who benefit the most from it.

Let all people enjoy it, appropriate it, etc. , as long as we are the ones seeing those big bags. Not the whites at the top who aint have no part in this creation

street rap is just what E40 boosie and people selling mixtapes out the trunk have been doing for decades.

so that's kind of kin to independent Idk man. we're a young genre too.
