I don't think the left needs a Trump persona, but somebody who has the same fearlessness as Trump did to go against his party establishment would definitely help.
But I don't think Bernie vs Dems and Trump vs Republicans is quite the same dynamic. The disagreements between Bernie and the Democratic party is more substantive and ideological, while the disagreements between Trump and the Republican party seemed to have been more about presentation.
The Republican party establishment is now supporting Trump in a way that the Democratic party establishment would never support Bernie, regardless of what his electoral success would have been.

Bernie could never beat the centrists after they teamed up to support Biden. As soon as Amy, Pete and MSNBC threw all their support behind Biden as the hail mary against Bernie after North Carolina it was over.
And Bernie probably didn't want the blood of voters on his hands due to coronavirus spreading at the polls.
The only hope progressives have is to hope that Biden loses so badly in the general and Democrats embarrass themselves in their inability to beat one of the most controversial politicians/administrations in history again that the DNC dies and something new can come out of its ashes.
