He may not be your cup of tea since i feel like you like the auteurs of cinema a lot and he’s just more of a technical wizard, barely works with scripts
But yeah at least check out one of his most popular films and see if it’s for you
I would’ve thought you would have at least heard about Irréversible since it’s so well known

Auteur theory isn't about scripts btw fam
Wym?
Auteur theory had to do with directors leaving their marks through mise en scene, editing, etc... (Though mise en scene was the primary object of critique.) In a nutshell its how a director uses the visual language of cinema to set themselves apart from other filmmakers in style and concept — much like how major literary figures each have writing styles that are more or less unique to them. So "auteur" was a cinematic version of literature's "author" to describe these kinds of directors, rather than just saying "filmmaker" because auteur implies a kind of artistic ownership/responsibility.

It's 10 minute run time was welcome compared to all these other 2.5 hour silents I gotta watch now. Felt like a less dazzling American version of Man With The Movie Camera.
Am i fake kino lover for not having checked anything before the 50s? (Maybe 2 late 40s films at most)
Theres just sooo many films out there to peep, and each year we seem to get more. It’s gonna take a while for me to check out films THAT old tbh
Watch universal monsters at least in my opinion and then the undisputed classics
Some can surprise you although the films feel more like elaborate plays in a way which I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing
That one dude recommended “M” I second that 100%
Out of the Past (1947), Raw Deal (1948), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), T-Men (1947) all great movies before 1950 as well. They might change your perception on how much it’s worth watching older than 1950 movies
one of my film history teacher's letterboxd entries😭 2 stars for 8 1/2 and 2.5 for la dolce vita too

Fellini is pretty relentless and self involved, I could see someone with otherwise good taste just not digging it. Same with early Chaplin but replace relentless with saccharin.
