you can also recommend a tv show if you know any :)

watch jacques demy's films. they're fun. also recommend jean-pierre melville and louis malle, le feu follet is my favorite of his.
s***, you can even watch tintin in french with english subs.

i've watched a lot of french films and i've strengthened my vocabulary which is kinda important to know the articles for nouns.

learning basic french through self-studies right now and i'll take french classes twice a week by next month. good luck

if you want any tips on which books to get just ask

Anything from Renoir, Bresson, Becker, Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer, Malle, Varda, Melville, Rivette, Besson, Denis, Cocteau, and Tati. So many esteemed French directors.

Becker is probably my favorite director of the lot. Le Trou, Hands Off the Loot, and Casque D'Or are all amazing. My favorite movie from somebody not on that list is Alexandre Bustillo's Inside (2007) which was part of the New French Extremity fad. Insane gore and brutality.

Les Intouchables was the original movie of an American remake that was in theatres just a couple years ago. The original itself isn't even old, released around 2012. It's with Omar Sy, a good French actor.

I also think movies that aren't fully French would help you out to begin with to get used to it. There are some cross-over comedies from Canada that are well rated like Bon Cop, Bad Cop 1 and 2.
Vincent Cassel is a good French actor that even stars in hollywood movies.

Raw and Polisse are really good btw.
