It’s not my favorite Cale album, but it’s still great work. Crazy I used to ever dismiss the guy.

dismissed the VU pioneer and producer of Marble Index and Desertshore? why?

man would be a goat even if Venus In Furs is the only thing he ever contributed to

Because I assumed his approach to music was antithetical to what I get out of it. He’s produced some work that just feels antagonistic to me. Even little things like how he actively told the band Squeeze on their first record to make the songs less appealing. I respect White Light/White Heat, but I still don’t connect with much of it. Doug Yule’s contributions are more my speed. Even some of Lou Reed’s most earnest and beautiful moments were side eyed by Cale at the time. Paris 1919 proved to me he was as emotionally sincere, if not more so than Reed and Yule.

Maybe the most devastating singer/songwriter track of the year.

“Life seems so rosy in the cradle
But I'll be a friend, I'll tell you what's in store. There's nothing at the end of the rainbow. There's nothing to grow up for anymore”

Edit: I just discovered Elvis Costello did a cover of it.

This one as well. These songs more so capture the actual expected feelings of a divorce than anything on their actual divorce album a decade later.

some less fusion-y 1974 jazz. lot of the goats from the postbop generation still going strong. spiritual jazz movement probably in its peak still

hm yeah Eno has some iffy takes when producing other bands as well... trying to talk Tina Weymouth out of releasing Genius Of Love in such accessible form

have you heard Cales production on Nico's album from this year? very potent apparently :ohno:
