I also find it highly disturbing that Nigeria was some how singled out when the actual memorandum doesn’t mention any one country at all specifically lmfao hahahaha it’s wild we’ve got all these advancements in technology and we’re still being fooled by clickbait
Supporting lgbtq grassroots initiatives and influencing the media's portrayal of lgbtq topics and issues is where tangible change begins. I don't think people realize how much the media sets the agenda of public discourse and allows peoples' views to be challenged.
The US can only do so much in this regard, but in Nigeria (I know this country was falsely singled out in here) has shown that there is progress, albeit slow. Just recently, two Nigerian filmmakers said they are are willing to risk the prospect of imprisonment by releasing their lesbian movie. It goes completley against the negative stereotypes depicted in Nigerian media. We should support an increase in vocal and visible aspects of these oppressed groups.
Forcing the East to subscribe to Western “morals” has always worked in the west’s favor !
F*** your religion, f*** your values, do our way or get punished.
Imagine being this obsessed about the politics of other countries.
Fix your country before trying to police other people laws and morals.
I bet you wouldn't be saying this s*** if you were gay.
As a Nigerian, I ain’t got no problem with this. I don’t think it will work to change the hearts and minds of the people to actually be more accepting of gays, but something needs to be done to combat the fierce homophobia in the country. There are instances of gay people being dragged out their houses and beaten to death.
Slippery slope but unlawful and inhumane discrimination must be defeated whenever and however
The most disturbing thing about this is that people fell for the lie
Second most disturbing thing is how little people care about gay people
When Africa stops f***ing with the west SHTF
Hopefully Nigeria de-dollarizes. The US is a homophobic dumpster fire that is speed running back in time by the day and Joe is doing jack s*** about it. Yes it would obviously be good to see Nigeria become inclusive of LGBT+ folks, but the US is one of the leaders of transphobia and homophobia at an institutional level in the world. It has lost any moral authority if it had any to begin with and is a giant embarrassment.
I fully support LGTBQ+ rights worldwide & believe that everyone should be treated with kindness & respect.
That said, political & financial sanctions don't address the societal views of LGTBQ+ persons in Nigeria. It's a bandaid to a bigger issue.
It's not even a band-aid
It's like going into an open wound and making the gash deeper
