Why do record companies/artists care so much about getting to the top of the Billboard 200? Does the record company or the artist get a bonus or something? It's the only reason I could see why a record company would sell these albums at a loss

Big artists are the ones that typically used these methods.
Record companies don't mind since they already know they're gonna recoup any potential losses (if any) since these kinds of artist are bigger.
Last sentence makes the most sense from the artist's POV, it gives them more leverage
But for the label? I'm surprised they'd even accept the massive discount thing that Trav did the Utopia vinyl, especially since they pay all of the expenses associated with manufacturing the vinyl copies
Well the label can say "our artists combined for 20 #1 songs this year out of 52 weeks" to the shareholders or to new artists they want to sign. They can say "we make superstars"
billboard should just be telling us how many streams overall a project got first week
sure streaming farms probably exist but everything else can be faked too
constantly changing what counts as a sale is stupid

I think they reached that point already, didn't they just change the rules a year or two ago?
I think so but these arbitrary minimum prices seem very exploitable
These rules are aimed at disproportionately fanatic stanbases who'll do things like buy cassettes and cds they'll never listen to in an effort to support their favorite artist's chart domination.
The Taylor, Nicki and especially K pop stans are so crafty and connected i just see them fixing this game quickly
This is anti-consumer. If labels want to sell their physical albums at a financial loss, then let them.

Would basically be allowing the big labels to subsidize chart positions
Im all for 99 cent vinyl records but is that pro consumer or just chart exploitation

They still can

Can’t complain about more money for the artist
Taylor is done
Weeknd somehow outworsened Taylor with the variants with his last record. Bro was selling vinyl variants of his album that only had 1/3 of the total tracklist, and then on week after release had the album with the whole tracklist up for sale

Yeah I agree, artists and their stans will figure out the new meta in a year or two and exploit it. But I am glad they are attempting to fix the problem, even if it means nothing ultimately

they can sell them they're just not gonna count towards billboard i don't see the issue

Wtfff
No wonder he sold 500k
these rules are more so aimed at taylor swift tho, they added rules of only 4 editions to an album which is a direct target at her and her 15 versions of an album
drake selling 15k physicals isnt on there mind
taylor moved 1.6 MILLION physicals first week last album
Taylor has never sold a physical album for less than any of the prices in OP lol

And im still gonna see chart twitter pages and KTT members compare numbers between eras(pre and post streaming) without providing any context
Other day I saw SZA passed Thriller for most weeks on BB charts
S*** is depressing, pathetic--please forget it
Any post 2016 numbers should include an * beside them when being compared to pre streaming numbers. It's only fair
