My friend that’s in med school and I were talking about this the other night. The dynamic of power between white doctors and with non-white patients in general. He mentioned some studies that show non-white patients get better outcomes from non-white doctors. Just another facet of society where white skin makes a difference in the treatment you receive

Generally they do teach that stuff. Higher risk of hypertension among black people is one example.

nice one. teaching higher risk of hypertension among black people is barely scratching the surface and is barely related to what the OP is concerned about.

So I’ve personally never noticed anything regarding doctors treating black patients any differently than white patients. Tbh the thought of a patient’s skin color doesn’t even really cross my mind when seeing patients besides for like the appearance of rashes or the frequency in different diseases in different populations of people.

Now I’m not saying that racism in medicine doesn’t exist. I’ve definitely seen studies with black people have worse outcomes than white people, but I haven’t really delved in enough to know exactly why.

Was going through health issues a few years ago; alot of pain every single day. Went to specialist, after specialist and after running tests they would give me the run around on a diagnosis + refer me to another doctor. Mind you, these niggas are hard as f*** to make appointments for. You schedule in June and won't see them till October

Long story short, I said f*** all this running around. We already ruled out life-threatening s***. I changed my diet, started working out more and now I use tea + ibuprofen when I'm in pain (which has VASTLY subsided and no longer daily).

this s*** happened to me too and I’m white Went two years with bullshit cause specialists didn’t care and it takes months to get an appointment

I think it’s more of a comment on America’s health care system

I’m just adding my experience, not disregarding anything lol

If anything, at least it may add some reasoning aside from race so people don’t feel so helpless in our system

It’s all of us getting screwed over by doctors unless your rich

I think it's more of a comment on how much diet and exercise can improve your life. You don't necessarily need to see a doctor to make healthy lifestyle changes.

did you check the links on the first page? the f*** is wrong with you?

this is a genuine thing. this has got nothing to do with scaring black people.

do you realise that black women especially are at risk because doctors a lot of the time don’t believe their pain? that’s why they die disproportionately during pregnancy. idiot

if this were the case then it would just be limited to black people’s experience in the us.

it’s not the fact that it’s racism from white doctors but more implicit bias and white doctors not being aware of certain signs of life threatening illnesses that may be easy to spot with a white person

i think a bunch of black people have more or less been turned away because their skin colour hadn't turned

"It feels like an (obstetrician) problem, but really, maternal mortality is a broader societal problem," she said. "If everyone pays a little more attention to their piece of the pie, hopefully we can start to move the needle."

"Some hospitals and health care systems have implemented training on implicit or unconscious bias," Petersen said, "to think about how people's backgrounds and unconsciousness may be affecting their care."

From your own links. Also both things can be true. Yes, it is still very dangerous to push the narrative during a pandemic that doctors are our to get black people. Especially with the rise of all this antivax bullshit.

I don't care what race you are get regular check ups and please god go see a doctor if there's something wrong with you

i never actually said that doctors are out to get black people. i’m saying this implicit bias makes it hard because they dismiss genuine concerns from black people.

i brought it up as a topic because clearly it needs to be talked about. look at the tweet i shared in my OP and look at some of the replies to it.

it’s even worse during this pandemic because black people have been affected the worst in countries like the uk, us and yes it’s partly because a lot of people are in close densely populated areas but that excuse clearly doesn’t make sense if african countries are doing a good job of keep deaths low.

a black nurse died because he couldn’t breathe. they had told him to stay home.
