I was watching the trailer for On the Come Up. It is Sanaa Lathan's directorial debut. It has method man, lil yachty, rapsody in it , along with Mike Epps. As I was watching I was thinking this does not look good but at the same time I feel need to watch it and support. What do you guys think?
(Sidenote) I think it is dope when you you can get rappers in movies because it can help with the marketing but I think i will pass on this one. Also I have some other topics on black media worth having a good discussion that I will post later
I mean I like Belly. That's a bad movie but looks incredible.
That’s not a bad movie
Foh

It's like a long music video it's intriguing
It's good shots put together
Acting horrible too f***in Nas said he wanna go to AFRICA
Problem is black culture doesn’t know how to write “well” like they did in the ‘90s

Boyz in the Hood n Menace are genuinely great films tho

It is. Stop letting nostalgia blind you.

Didn't say they weren't.
You shouldn't be looking at media (movies, music, tv etc) through that lens imo
But I'm not black so
I dont have the urge to auto support anything except people i actually know
Otherwise only support if its something im genuinely interested in no matter what or who it is
no
What is bad about it?
This video sums up a lot of the issues with it in an entertaining way.
It's a movie you watch because it looks good and has a lot of cool scenes. But when you actually sitting down with it and paying attention to the acting and characters...it's pretty bad. There's a lot of plot holes or moments where the viewer just has to suspend their disbelief mostly because they don't really explain how certain moments happen or what the actual motives are of the characters. Nas narrating throughout is also very dry and redundant. It's an alright movie to turn on in the background with some homies, but when you to start to watch it seriously you see where it's bad.
All that being said the movie still looks incredible, there's some great shots and aesthetics throughout the movie. Much of that is owed to Hype Williams being one of the goat hip-hop/rap music video directors. He knows how to make s*** look cool. His writing however is weak. The acting is also gonna take a big hit cause you got rappers and singers carrying the bulk of the dialogue. It also doesn't help that it really seems like they just grabbed some random niggas off the street to be some of the actors. I guess it gives it some authenticity since they're making a crime/street movie, but like...yeah b just watch the movie again and you'll start to understand more.
