And so like you just twist your hair with your fingers throughout the day to get em like that or am I missing something?
don't do this, weakens your hair. just let it rock
Would brents hair in this pic be considered freeform? tryna get my s*** like this
I have this same dry curl pattern texture but my hair cus of my s***ty lack of moisturizing habit doesnt look as popping 2-3 days after my wash and condition
But doing a twist out can achieve similar results thats what i plan on doing
Have a question:
So my hair has been way more frizzy/balling up way more than before:
Don't mind the scrunched forehead
This is what it looks like from the back
There are a few spots with that frizzy/ball stuff happening including two near the top on either side where I can pull the hair apart to the scalp like this:
Is this just due to the tight curl pattern of my hair or could it be something else/should I be worried about balding?
how y’all be starting free form ? i’ve been trying with sponge / towel but just getting more defined curls, rarely do i reach a stage where hair locks, only if i actively finger twist

freeform is a pretty long process tho... how long you stuck with it? and how long was your hair?
I did sponge semi-freeforms a few years that eventually locked up well in a couple months. didn't feel like it truly started maturing into fuller locs till about 5+ months after tho. its a lot of patience but there should be some noticeable process within a couple months. Those curls will eventually lock and wash regularly too even if it feels like a step backward after
currently on my second time doing this. a couple months in and have somewhat spiky hair thats locking up. the back is taking longer tho

if your hair is anything like mine (different textures in different parts) it'll be at least a couple years before it's fully locked. no one's gonna be mad at you if you just head start some of them with loose twists tho

true. meant to ask what type of hair too cus that matters.
Edit: feel like there’s kinda confusion too cus he’s not fully freeforming. Sponging would quicken the process but freeforming would take years like you said

Nah I think you’re good but, your hair looks dry. Dry hair + really tight curls = the way your hair looks now
Idk where you live but if it’s winter time where you’re at you gotta moisturize more frequently in the winter that cold dry air is no good for us

Thank you so so so much
Really put me at ease
My hair is dry + I have tight curls + it's the dead of winter and cold where I'm at so it perfectly lines up with what you're saying
gonna stop washing my Twists for a while. they have yet to form into locs and its been a month or so. i'll still moisturize it daily with jojoba oil

for sure the curl pattern, yours is just extremely tight. nothing to worry about at all. it happens to me as well

Brothers coming through
Thank you!
Are beanies bad for your locs???
In that weird stage where I'm either gonna cut em off or dye em (basically not liking em as much anymore) so until then, planned on wearing beanies. But is it bad for my hair?

I see a s*** ton of people promote wearing beanies cause it protects and and gets them rubbing together and lockin up more
worst i could imagine is maybe dry out your hair but idk if they would do that

i would reckon they'd do the opposite of dry out your hair, they just offer some protection from the elements

no they're fine

don't stop washing! just wash less. if you don't have super oily ypipo hair you can go several weeks without shampooing. look into co-washing!
Do any of you guys brush your locs? And should I use a leave in conditioner?
idk s*** about brushing but it sounds kinda counter productive. as for leave-ins, i recommend against because of build up.

it'll take years either way, sponging will encourage your hair to shape itself but won't promote the actual knotting process. plus, it creates sort of artificial sectioning which is different than the way your hair will naturally form locs. it can be counter productive
