dude any updates?
cant wait to cop 4k box set
I checked and doesn’t look like it
apparently Wong worked on these for 5 years but also tinkered with them quite a bit, which obviously far from everyone is happy about... like the guy who wrote this article with tbh some fairly good points

But then there's some comparisons here where I actually think it looks kinda good?
https://twitter.com/Nick_Newman/status/1333813106527531008the trailers are also actually the original trailers recut with the restored footage so you can compare those shots for yourself. Overall image quality is hugely improved without a doubt. Some very green-tinted stuff in the original looks more natural now, but in other shots there's a fairly strong green tint (In The Mood For Love will def be very controversial...).
Extremely hype to revisit Chungking, Fallen Angels and Happy Together through these though. Those films changed my whole perspective on cinema but because they were so impactful I only watched them once so far and now it's been a few years.
Excited to see how Fallen Angels looks I actually liked that change on the scene where the jukebox is. That’s my favorite scene in the whole movie
Sucks we couldn’t get the originals alongside but im gonna make sure to either have them stored somewhere and they’re not in bad quality so …. I understand the frustrations tho
Also have never seen As Tears Go By so hyped for that

yeah it's so frustrating they didn't do a faithful version on a special disc. They probably did a faithful version anyway before they started tinkering with the footage? I mean yeah it would be more work to finish up two versions but it still feels lazy to me.
That said, based on the trailers I do think a lot of the tinkering might actually work quite well for me, but there might be some shots which will feel awkward now, knowing the earlier versions.
Tears Go By I once tried to watch but didn't finish, it felt much less emotional and just all-out macho genre action which I wasn't a big fan of. Days of Being Wild is a much much better early work imo, to me it feels as if that's the film where he really found his voice

TIL (well, yesterday actually) that Yumeji's Theme from In The Mood For Love is called that because WKW actually repurposed the theme of Yumeji (1991), one of the late, surreal dramas by Seijun Suzuki

in! added to watchlist, this looks great
As Tears Go By still his best movie. S*** is just too perfect man. Sometimes that 80’s nostalgia just hits

Actually the last part of a whole trilogy of surreal dramas, all of them look pretty great such a prolific career.. Was blessed to be able to see a film print of Tokyo Drifter in my local film museum last year, insane sets and colors and just overall such a fun film

damn I didn't realize it was part of a trilogy and ten years after the second one
Interesting filmog fr! I remember seeing Branded to Kill somewhere but it didn't have subs or sound iirc. I need to find more of his films in better quality and really sit with them.

I love the Branded to Kill backstory about how after it released
"Suzuki was ostensibly fired for making "movies that make no sense and no money". Suzuki successfully sued Nikkatsu with support from student groups, like-minded filmmakers and the general public and caused a major controversy through the Japanese film industry. Suzuki was blacklisted and did not make another feature film for 10 years but became a counterculture hero."
"movies that make no sense and no money" that phrase always cracks me up lol

So apparently as of last Friday the restorations + Ashes of Time Redux are streaming on MUBI in many countries... So if you got a VPN it's go time
MUBI was founded on the principle that it should be possible to stream In The Mood for Love in a café of Tokyo
Edit: according to an instagram post including "Brazil, Latin America, Turkey, France..."

MUBI came through!
Still hoping for a cinema release too but we're only getting more and stricter lockdowns in Germany now the film museum was supposed to open again in April and now even the supermarkets close smh

update: got me a VPN, it looks like this for me now - they're only slowly rolling it out over the next few weeks. If until then I still don't find any mega links online I'll go with this
Also this site is awesome to keep up with MUBI internationally and you can check which countries get the restorations. Plus through the site you can get a 70% off offer on NordVPN, for me that's 3 bucks a month
finally an actually helpful ad placement

Already watched Chungking through MUBI, it's gorgeous looks beautiful. Fallen Angels following tomorrow!
I’ve only watched In the Mood for Love, should I watch Fallen Angels or Chungking Express? I’m leaning towards the latter but I don’t know much about either film
