I'd have to give up the Best Songs and Best Films threads to think about that again no that was a cool phase tho
Yeah those were so dope. Inspired me to just start doodling s*** in my notebooks for film/music logging
Interesting read, but i do gotta contest the writer's downplaying of the lyrics as just playful kid-centric pop moreso than anything sexually charged.
I wont argue that the song (lyrics, music, and all) is definitely intended to sound and look more kid-friendly, and is indeed very different from Britney Spears' debut as a "blossoming schoolgirl". But the song's kiddie bop style and the lyrics go hand-in-hand
I'm usually not the type to get hung up on the whole "they're a child!!!", grooming discourse that a gold chunk of Twitter users seem to be obsessed with... But there's definitely something not right about a song and video with those lyrics being featured on a wall-sized screen in a room with a little girl jumping on her bed singing along.
I don't think the writer has any immoral intentions in how he describes it or anything — but to mention lines like "i'll show you mine if you show me yours" (a cliche of little kid-speak) and basically say it's more innocent than not because it's a vague, meta-concept of Pop, doesn't hold water for me. He makes a point to say it's not nearly as bad as "Barbie Girl", but i'd argue the two songs are more similar than not — they are conceptually achieving the same thing with the kiddie-bop music and personas; Aqua's lyrics were just more upfront and satirical, while B*Witched were "innocently suggestive".
They also claim B*Witched "aimed at 9-10 year olds", and I'm not sure how true this actually is. The other singles from their debut are very much a "who's who" of 90s pop group genre formula: Slow romance ballads and bubblegum kitsch. But the same year "C'est La Vie" the was featured in Smart House, it was also in What Women Want and Daria — which definitely aren't children's media.
I'm sure a lot of preteen girls listened to them, just like tons listened to Christina Aguilera and Britney. But B'Witched's debut album didn't go platinum in 12 months by "aiming at 9-10 year olds".
TL;DR - Didn't mean to sound like i dont like the article you shared fam haha, on the contrary. Im gonna read more in that series cause there was some interesting bits in that C'est La Vie one

I've always been scared to get creative (since I was in high school anyway) but I kind of proved something to myself with those even though it's just s***ty little replications was kinda like Warhol in miniature now that I think about it

Yeah im with him on that part too, but he loses me when talks about the copycat groups each serving a different "Girl Power" age demographic. I think it's much cleaner and more realistic to just touch on the copycat culture and what came out of it — because people of all ages were listening to Spice Girls and all their clones. None of the groups (the super successful ones at least) pandered to a limited age range, especially ones as specific as 9-10, pre-teens, and early teens.
"Nobody went for the broad-church mass appeal which the Spice Girls had ..."
Of course they did. All of them went for that. That's inherent to the idea of "Girl Power" copycats existing. You cant be a copycat trying to capitlize on the biggest media trend, but focus mostly on 4th graders or try to become the dictators of Radio Disney, haha. B*Witched went platinum.
Thanks for those other links! Def gonna read

I wish i had subscribed to cool magazines like that back in the day, or even just generally interesting, indepedent quarterlies or something with worthwhile writing while i was in college
The other day we were unpacking more boxes and found two medium sized ones that were filled with 4-years worth of GQ and New Yorker mags from when i was subscribed to them a long time ago.
I took them all out to the back yard to our fire pit and burned them with no remorse. But if i had some cool 90s/00s gaming mags or music zines i would keep them on a shelf in our office

How often you play them?
Several of the bands/albums in OP arent what i'd call britpop either but im happy to talk about them anyway haha
There is no universal sound to it. I went through multiple articles and lists to make those choices. Putting my foot down and sticking with it.
u like bowie ziggy, aladdin sane, diamond dogs? im sure u know those records but if u don't they are where suede got it all from
I get specifically Aladdin Sane from Suede mixed with a bunch of Roxy Music.
Bowie + Smiths = Britpop almost
You have to throw in 60’s pop generally in there too
Jack Black told a story how we went to see Radiohead play and Supergrass was opening, and bumped into Elliott Smith right before Radiohead got on stage. He only went to see Supergrass
Elliot seems like he would dig Radiohead more tbh
notice spiritualized aren't in OP...great band...his gf ran off with richard ashcroft (the verve) and he got super depressed and addicted to heroin and made this s***

The opening track with the Elvis interpolation coming in stronger towards the climax always makes me cry
