He's obviously synonymous with being the artist that birth a culture and sound of R&B that highlights the songwriting and melodies instead of the vocal ability (which is an insane feat for a rapper)

but at his peak he had a better singing voice than the PND's Bryson Tiller Tory Lanez and Brent Faiyaz's of the world

He actually could sing a bit

w/o autotune dude sounds like ur average guy at a karaoke

w autotune, i mean the guy knows how 2 work it. he makes rlly infectious hooks and he can rlly sing them well, proper delivery n everything.

singing well w autotune is a complete different skill set vs no auto, i can admit that, but as far as autotune sht goes, drake is p great

Sans Drake, the names you mention all mostly occupy vocal ranges that the average person can’t hit. It’s their style of singing and enunciation that sounds less singy. This is cause the entire industry moved towards giving the audience relatability…but the image of it

Those singers are examples of the industry’s encouragement of deceptive relatability. The mfs who could actually sing had to assimilate to Drake’s immediate influence following Take Care since Drake was authentically relatable in his voice. Imo tho lol

It's shown by live performances that all the names I mentioned can't sing that well. It's not like they're dumbing down their vocals, their range just isn't there. I agree though that Drake's influence with Take Care made people to move towards less flashy nonchalant singers

He use to be able to sing a little bit, he just needed a vocal coach and he would have been better. But now he lost his voice tbh

he can sing well enough. but he is the entire reason hip hop shifted to melodic in the first place, so with that said, it doesnt matter if he can or not because he made it acceptable to sing even if you cant.

He's a worse singer than everyone mentioned in OP tbh

I think part of the problem is that he's getting older and his voice is getting deeper and he hasn't really adjusted to it

He had a really nice, clear tone on Hold On We're Going Home that's very bright and passionate-sounding, but he's f***ing awful on Circo Loco and Falling Back. Not sure if the key isn't right for his range or what happened there.

Hmm you could be right. Though I feel like the singing at the end of Circo Loco was intentionally 'bad' if you know what I mean. Sounds way better on Spin Bout You for example. I know Falling Back is polarizing but I'm ngl I still love it as much as I did when I first heard it. I know the falsetto is not the best, and highly processed but again, I think it was intentional. It's definitely not his key and I can see why many people are not fans of it. Has Drake ever used his falsetto before? Maybe on Teenage Fever ("I met someone new - last - night and we kicked it...") but I can't think of any other examples. I think that's for a reason lol.

Listen to him trying to hit HOWGH, not the best.

I think he's started to sound a bit better this year live, but like people ITT have said, probs just better autotune.

Somewhat. But no he's not nearly as good as you or he thinks.

This section will have you believe dude is top tier. Not even close.

His singing is all production tbh. He can hide it much better now.
When he started I thought his singing was trash. At least it sounds good on record now

So he got ghost vocalists too?

    Probably.

    Dude is a business atp.
There's probably a s*** ton of people in the studio making everything to make every song great.

That's how you stay on top for like 20 years.

But yeah he doesn't get street credit but wtf is that now the rap game doesn't really exist except for show.

I have a reasonably deep baritone and I've found falsetto is actually a great way to protect your voice if you're singing on a nightly basis instead of shouting high notes you can't hit. A baritone with a good falsetto can cover a lot of ground and maybe that's something Drake should practice with his voice getting lower with age. He tries it on Falling Back and yeah it could use more work but it's not a bad idea.

Lately it seems like he's comfortable staying super low in his range and just trying to hit the notes, but it comes out sounding emotionally flat.

I think it's like a lot of people said: the standard for vocals this gen mostly comes down to melody and not timbre or vibrato because autotune does its thing, so rapping and vocal melodies have become his focus instead of the technical stuff.

Rn he’s way worse as a singer than he was early on but he’s way better as a rapper so it kinda evens out

  • Aug 11, 2023

Kinda makes you wonder though if Drake doesn’t really want to or have the ability to push himself any further vocally why not fully commit to making fire rap albums and sing a lot less but then again HNM still a classic even with his limited range so what do I know
