pretty dumb question
Most SNES / NES era games aged pretty well. PS1/N64 era has some games that didn't age well. I am playing Resident Evil 4 and FF9 atm and it doesnt really make a difference for me.
those two games are def timeless classics
Also, how can you say visual presentation matters so much in video games being timeless but not at all in film?
of course, it's just an industry so obsessed with fidelity that when we see an old game as opposed to an old film for example, we treat it as something that needs to be updated, rather than something that can be appreciated as of its time
You can say the exact same thing about films from the 1930s vs 1960s. Or 1960s vs 1980s. Or 1990s vs present day.
You can also say the same thing about late 70s-early 80s video compared modern digital filmmaking tech. And the modern post-production field during the past 20 years would look like a sci-fi movie to someone who worked in post-production during most decades of the 20th century.
Thats not even mentioning the CG animated film genre. When's the last time you watched the first Shrek movie from 2001? The CG looks shockingly undetailed and plain — i still pictured it holding up really well visually in my head, until I saw it more recently and realized i was totally wrong. Compare it to any CG animated film from the last 5-10 years and the difference is huge. (Same goes for most others from that era, the first Toy Story for example is much "plainer" looking than most probably remember.)
Have you never seen how it looks when characters in a film crica 1920s move quickly/run around? Its like someone pushed the fast-forward button. Or what about the entire golden age ofhollywood monster movies from the 50s, or the first dozen or so godzilla films compared to modern takes like Pacific Rim? Even something lower budget and made to look poor quality, like Cloverfeld, looks light years ahead of similar films released in the 80s.
You're brushing over huge leaps in film's visual presentation like b&w vs color (and various types of color systems used throughout the 20th century), major editing styles, aspect ratios, etc etc

Played RE4 for the first time on the wii last year
What a piece of s*** storyline and dialogue but the game was still GOAT
Haven’t played on a ps3 or ps2 console in years. Doubt I’ll even go back tjj in old games Ive loved and replay them. It’s exactly why I haven’t bought kingdom hearts remaster , cause I’ve played both games like three times when I was a kid . I don’t feel like going back to them now.
I think it's rough for a game to be timeless but I believe skyrim is as a result of all the mods
And then stardew valley genuinely feels like something that will never age a day due to how its put together.
I can see minecraft being fully timeless as well
Really nobody else in here mentioning stardew... Weird I feel like it's the definition of timeless, next to minecraft
halo 1-reach
some games will last longer than others and it depends on art style but no game is timeless
games are in the same boat as most forms of entertainment where they objectively get better with time
San Andreas is definitely timeless and it’s not as outdated as people think as far as the PC version goes
Niggas are still making memes & speed runs from that game
