This is a reductive way to look at movies. S*** was based off the tale that inspired Hamlet, so if you knew that story then yea I could see it being "predictable".

But there's more to a great movie than just that, it was masterfully shot and paced, the fight scenes were visceral, the acting was great, soundtrack hit and the third act genuinely had me stressed.

Like damn, not every great movie reinvents the wheel. The Dark Knight is just Michael Mann's HEAT with a Batman reskin. Sometimes the s*** is just a great experience.

I guess I should hate the Coens version of Macbeth since it’s predictable

Gang did you watch Decision To Leave yet? S*** is in my top 3, arguably one.

Decision to Leave is pretty much the best directed movie I’ve seen this year. At first I was scratching my head when it ended, like, what did all that symbolism add up to? But then I realized I had a great time and the main relationship was really enjoyable to watch.

In order for me to love a movie it either has to A. Surprise me with the experience or B. Make me fall in love with its characters. The Northman did neither. 🤷‍♂️

the download i had included 2 English subtitles...one would give you some of the german parts without the regular English subs, and the other would give you all the english subs without any of the german ones lol

idk if this satisfies what you're looking for since none actually give full subs for each language for the entire runtime

That’s the thing. I don’t have hard criteria for what’s to judge a movie by. Police Story with Jackie Chan and Fallen Angels by Wong Kar Wai are two of my fave movies

Police Story didn’t surprise me, I knew it was gonna be a fun action movie going in and Jackie is essentially playing the comedic character he is in most of his movies.

Fallen Angels is literally “vibes: the movie” , none of the characters are really characters you grow attached to, it’s really just about nightlife in Hong Kong and loneliness.

If I judged those movies by the criteria you laid out I prob wouldn’t enjoy them as much.

I take everything by a case by case basis.

Yeah but everyone has their own standards fam lol.

Some ppl love “the vibes” while others are all about characters.

Then you got some folks who’s all about plot twist and surprises, etc

    It’s really all personal preference

And people can have their own standards but they have to understand that maybe the movie ain’t for them.

The movie ain’t tryna do what you want it to do, it’s doing what it set out to do, and either you connect with it or you don’t lol

But just throwing away its artistic merit just cuz it doesn’t meet your strict guidelines is kinda strange to me lmao

Oh s*** what’s happenin here lol

    Nah I do hear ya
I got love for you too @SegaDreamFlash and I gotta say this

I don’t wanna get lost in a word game
I think we may be in danger of over complicating things, and I started down that road

I don’t want to imply that I have a limited set of ideas for what makes a film good
Because, using Fallen Angels for example, I agree on how it’s a vibe movie, and I love vibe movies
It would also just fall a little into my unique experience qualifier, and a little into my character qualifier

But there’s easier ways to talk about The Northman tbh lol
I can see the things that worked for you about the movie
Looking at it, detached, I can see the grimy epicness, and the talent involved
I had to defend it to one of my friends lol, as the guy right in the middle. It is some auteur s***, which you gotta respect
And I just wasn’t locked in enough to care like with the movies I love

Whatever gets you to lock in, either in the moment, or later, is a win
If I cared more about Viking s***, maybe I’d have a different experience, there’s always a lot that goes into our opinions

What usually has you fall in love with the characters?

On a more general level it’s characters who feel specific, and not cliched, and do things that real people do
That’s when you forget there’s even a movie between you
But when it comes to my taste I like lonely, sad f***ers
    People who are flawed
People who don’t feel like they can be themselves
    Maybe I see myself
    Maybe it’s just universally interesting

Word word I feel you on that 🙏🏽

I notice the characters i tend to like more are the ones the writers spent time writing backstories on and fleshing them out

It’s crazy cus majority of backstory won’t even make it into the film but it adds those realistic nuances and layers to them

Yeah that makes sense. Like with Tarantino. Even if you don’t use the backstory, it just makes you know the characters better. Lydia Tar definitely felt like a real person to me. That authenticity is 👌🔥

Yup Tarantino is a great example. Also the Safdies, like Good Time they sat down wit Pat and fleshed out his character Connie together. With uncut gems they had Howies entire life plotted out, even had a story written about him doing business with Puffy lol

But yeah I have no doubt Tár was completely fleshed out too. All the awards she won the director prolly knows exactly when she won em and how she celebrated the win after.
