I feel like it's possible the Cannes Film Festival head was confusing Oppenheimer's release date with another movie? Obviously he's a credible source, but the way he says it kind of offhand without implying it's a delay makes me think he may be thinking of another movie's release date. Or at least I hope so.

Unfortunately no, I would have loved that but it’s being released at the end of the year as part of their awards strategy. My two regrets this year are “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie,” but it won’t be ready either by May.

Personally, it would be a great day for Cinema to have both movies running same day.
