Headlines blended Rapping and Singing so seamlessly like hardly anyone has ever done before. That song had bars yet was pure melody. Started From the Bottom is probably the first true Trap/Pop song.

I Think they were way more groundbreaking than Laugh Now Cry Later which just feels like God's Plan and Toosie Slide had a kid that won't ever amount to the achievements of either parent and those are two songs he has released in the past 2 years or so. I was expecting something new. Something innovative. Something that would have the whole world taking about and get people super excited for what's next from Drake.

Also I don't agree with your take on Change Clothes, Runaway and Swimming Pools. All three of those are iconic songs that will always be one of first songs people remember from that artist, era and/or album. I don't think the same will be said for Laugh Now Cry Later at all. I think the song is good man but pretty uninspiring at this point in his career and as the first or any single to an album that could make or break his authenticity as a rapper and quality artist.

That’s the thing about Drake tho bro... he already did so much innovation/groundbreaking s*** on the front end that went under appreciated so he shouldn’t really have anything to prove imo. I feel like everyone keeps looking for him to legitimize himself creatively when really everything he does is inherently creative asf. There has never been a rapper that does what he does. Not even close.

I’m not looking for him to reinvent the wheel on CLB personally. He’s not Kanye. I don’t expect him to be on some super avant garde, jewel embezzled mask/frank ocean lead choir singing in the background s*** lol. All I want from Drake at this point is a concise, cohesive body of work. That’s been my main issue with Drake albums since NWTS. I’ve enjoyed them all at varying degrees but they have all have kind of been all over the place. Instead of him trying something new and adding another sound to his long list of s*** he does I’m looking forward to him returning to form and focusing on his core sound in a way we haven’t heard since Take Care. LNCL is a great step in that direction imo. Kind of has a nostolgic Headlines feel. Definitely don’t agree with the Toosie Slide and God’s Plan comparisons. I think LNCL s***s on those and that’s coming from someone who f***s with those songs.

I don't want him to make an album all over the place either. I want him to mostly stick with one style has well. I just wish it wasn't something too predictable. Laugh Now Cry Later is 100% a song you would predict from Drake. At least if it's going to be predictable it should something memorable but I doubt it's going to be.

The song even shares the same producer as God's Plan. It has the same triumphant feel to meant for a stadium. It has Toosie Slides happy sound with nefarious undertones hidden within it and shares some similar elements to the beat as well imo.

Not really a stretch at all. His last four projects have not been as well received as you'd expect from an artist of his caliber. Everyone knows he can make hits but the quality of them is being put into question. The songs where he showcases high lyrical ability are few and far between. If Certified Lover Boy doesn't deliver I don't think anyone will ever think he can drop another album impresses the culture as much as So Far Gone, Take Care, Nothing Was the same or If You're Reading This It's Too Late did again.

Bro I don’t think Drake is capable of dropping a single that is not memorable at this point in his career lol. I actually think LNCL is going to be one of Drake’s most recognizable songs when it’s all said and done. S*** just feels good man. Well produced. 10 years from now when those trumpets come in and the boy slide thru with that “Whoa whooooooaaa” s*** finna be lit 😂 I kinda get where you’re coming from when you say it’s “predictable” to you but again I don’t think it’s productive to expect Drake to be someone he is not. The boy came in the game with his own genre. Now he’s experimenting with his own sound/shaping it as he sees fit. He’s the antithesis of Kanye. Kanye drastically reinvents himself every project. That’s his thing. Drake is like Apple, same brand we know and love with a few minor updates with each release lol. I’m totally fine with that approach and I think a Classic can be made either way. The genius of Drake’s music has been there all along. All we need is that consise/cohesive body of work and we got one on god 🙏🏽💯

Don’t get me wrong bro I totally get where your coming from. You’re holding Drake to a high standard and I fw that. If CLB ain’t a classic I’ll be the first to point it out. I just don’t feel like LNCL is any reason to feel like it won’t be. After Headlines it might be my favorite lead single from him tbh (I like it better than SFTB, One Dance, and God’s Plan) If anything has me nervous it’s this shaky ass rollout

  • I don't think so, buddy.

I feel ya bro. I do hold him to a high standard that I don't feel like he has been living up to recently. Laugh Now Cry Later doesn't give me hope but it's not like I'm hopeless. The amount of time he is taking on this album and some of the leaks like Not Around and Need Me / Sound 42 (and hopefully Vital) is giving me enough hope that this album will be one of his best and be very well-received. I'm just tired everyone calling him mid now.

I feel you bro. The response to DLDT had me heated... I think that has a lot more to do with the public’s perception of him than the actual music tho. If we being real every Drake project is fire compared to the average artist but the haters will never give it to him. If CLB is an absolute masterpiece it’ll shut a couple of people up but I’m sure there will still be hate in droves no matter what. At this point I’ll be surprised if any Drake albums hold out above 81 on metacritic. They really hate this man for some odd reason

That's really what I want man. You go on certain circles or social media and this Drake hate is at an all time high. Too many people think new niggas like Roddy Rich or Lil Baby is better than him it's disusting. I mean I like the guys like them but come on. Or even saying someone like Mac Miller (RIP), Logic or Tyler, the Creator has a better discography.

I just want a song/album that will shut them up like you said. But lowkey I think it's because they also hold him to a higher standard. They wouldn't be talking about or criticizing someone so much that they don't care about or think should be performing at the highest level. Hopefully Certified Lover Boy is the one.

I don't care what other people think as much as these posts might indicate. I personally believe Drake hasn't been living up to his fullest potential in the past couple of years. It's just annoying seeing everyone overexaggerate how much he has "fallen off". Even if the projects (Views, More Life and Scorpion) he has released in the past couple years haven't been as good as his skills should indicate, they were all still really good bodies of work that would be staples in most other rappers discography.

Even if as a whole they weren't as good as they could/should have been it's really annoying just because of that people act like he doesn't have really great songs that rival any song in the Drake's golden era of 2011-2015 like Feel No Ways, Redemption, Fire & Desire, Weston Road Flows, Too Good, Passionfruit, Lose You, Do Not Disturb, Jaded, Mob Ties, or Sandra's Rose.

It's because I'm a fan that I care about the quality of his music and how it is perceived. Nothing wrong with caring at all. It's not enough that everyone else's opinion on him affects my day or my opinion of him or anything I'm just saying it would be nice to see him be more well respected. I'm still enjoying the music, they ain't mutually exclusive things.

We all care about the quality of the music , but only half of us care about how it’s perceived.I only care about my opinion because haters gonna hate . I don’t care about what a guy from Russia or Quebec say about Drake if I like it I like it , but to each it’s own .

People weren’t even critiquing the music, they were just using it as an Opportunity to say they hate the guy.

Remember reading a review that started with criticisms of his house lol
