    Choking

potentially ruined my life by maybe failing uni again depending on this exam mark i’m waiting, just curious if it’s viable to actual still have a self-taught with no experience into a job or is that just copium from a long time ago and i should find just spend my time finding a different path into decent living. Not worried about the discipline to learn i lost all interests in everything i have and i just spent the last week pacing and worrying doing nothing.

My plan was to learn a beginner language over the next few months to see if i even enjoy coding. I guess i just want to know if it’s a skill worth pursuing to learn

I'm in a weird spot too, dropped out of college twice but decided to take CompTIA technical cert classes at the local CC

I might go back to college one day if everything plays out right, but not in my cards right now. I don't think I was ready for school tbh

Them niggas work like 12 hour days with insane deadlines and objectives

Silicon valley is a massive s***hole

Yeah, they exploit student immigrant labor through limited work visas, so Google or Facebook or whatever big tech company they work for has them by the balls in leverage

Not to mention that there are reports of the Indian caste system being informally enforced, so you can be extra f***ed if you're from India and you're from the wrong ethnic group.

i know someone hiring whats your background and are you in the us?

also general advice would be to leverage family and friends, have some sort of niche and a good idea of what you are interested in, enjoy, and are good at, try to leverage linked in and message people at companies youd like to work at (ive always hated this tbh rarely used it looking for internship but it can work) best success from this is if you find people at one of these companies who went to your school, also utilize and job portals through your school or alumni events

its competitive and lots of hiring freezes are happening but theres still options

Yep I f***ing hate those people , always complaining acting like the simplest stuff is impossible to do, and on top of that a lot of them won’t even take advice or try to figure things out on their own they just go straight to the TA/prof

Also funny how people come itt asking if they should learn to code like it’s some sort of back up plan for whatever their current career path is, no disrespect to those people it’s just funny how big the learn to code meme got

    Exactly

Like I always say if u rly want the bag do engineering or physics or math. Those skills are applicable to so many things. An engineer can become an elite programmer but a programmer never learns the s*** u will learn in an engineering program

Yea I feel like coding attracts a lot of people who overestimate their intelligence, or just have egos and want the big bag, then quickly learn that to rly excel in this field u have to think a certain way, a sort of resourcefulness and creativity mixed with a didactic approach to learning, and independence most of all, not traits everyone possess. I don't think most people have the ability to think as free-form as a good programmer does, it really requires a high degree of creativity and attention to detail

What is also interesting is just how the field is changing. I mean I was telling people years ago that it won't always be a great field for jobs, but with the new AI stuff it's pretty clear most of the easier more accessible coding jobs will mostly disappear

  • May 30, 2023

I mean I can code in like 7 languages and I code pretty much daily for work and I still don't feel like I have entered that advanced level of coding, where u are making new algorithms or even just reading papers and applying algorithms

I think that's what most coders will be asked of in the future, to do what ai can't which is make novel and effective algorithms

There’s really no point in reading an entire textbook when there’s so many resources and code examples online

Occasionally I’ll read a chapter the prof suggests but even then now a lot of the time I’ll link the pdf to chatgpt and ask for a synopsis
