I have a feeling America is going to be last to recover from this by a long way without a cure

  • Jun 12, 2020

I'd get used to the numbers we're seeing today; higher cases than usual, but slightly lower death totals than we were pulling in. It only makes sense as we open up and younger, healthier members of the population that were in quarantine become vectors.

It surprises me that so many between 50 and 64 years have died. I thought it's way less. Most people under 50 are mostly doing well. Young people should be tested even more to better understand how far spread it is.

In my county of riverside tests are free and they’re encouraging folks younger than 25 to get tested

I've heard kind of mixed things on the Oxford vaccine, it seems likely to make a big difference but nothing radical has been observed. Probably will cut mortality down by a lot without eliminating transmission altogether; viral loads were still observed in monkeys, though they were exposed to far more coronavirus than one would be in the wild.

Most likely a bridge to something more effective, rather than a silver bullet. Nonetheless, a lot of money is being sunk into this.

AstraZeneca has a deal in place to start pushing out 400 million doses by the end of the year to the EU:

China's vaccine has a separate timeline, the US has a few homegrown candidates of interest. We also threw $1.2b over to AstraZeneca for 300 million doses of the Oxford vaccine last month.

Yeah seems like most people here either think the pandemic is “over” or think the government lied about how serious it was. Or they just flat out value going to brunch over human lives. A lot of those people too.

Either way, from what I’ve seen there’s only about 1 out of 10 people wearing masks in indoor spaces like restaurants and stores. And wearing a mask outside is almost laughable at this point. They’ve somehow flipped the social stigma of not wearing a mask completely.
