The longest-hospitalized COVID-19 patient faces medical bills exceeding $1.1 million.

Michael Flor, the longest-hospitalized COVID-19 patient, has survived the illness, but the cost of his life comes with an unfathomable price tag. Flor is facing hospital bills totaling 181 pages and $1.1 million in costs.

“I opened it and said ‘holy bleep!’ “ Flor, 70, told The Seattle Times.

He stayed in Swedish Medical Center in Issaquah for 62 days. “He was as sick as you can get, with basically every organ system shutting down,” Dr. Anne Lipke, a Swedish pulmonary and critical-care physician, says of Flor.

At one point during his stay, he told his wife “You gotta get me out of here, we can’t afford this.”

Luckily for Flor, he's on Medicare and much of the bill will be covered. Congress has also granted $100 billion to help hospitals and insurance companies during the pandemic. Without these safety nets in place, Flor could be facing life-crippling debt.

“I feel guilty about surviving,” he said. “There’s a sense of ‘why me?’ Why did I deserve all this? Looking at the incredible cost of it all definitely adds to that survivor’s guilt.”

“It was a million bucks to save my life, and of course I’d say that’s money well-spent,” he said. “But I also know I might be the only one saying that.”

    god this is so dumb

mans really asked how come we can’t have public gatherings but it’s ok to protest?

why couldn't these people have gotten the virus?

not wishing death but man they need to go through some hardships that this virus causes. but you know what even then they'd just say it's a damn flu.

ngl tho it doesn’t make sense to me why we have to wait 2-3 days to open/touch packages but it’s ok for us to eat food out of Togo containers/bags/cups right away.. isn’t that kinda the same thing?

that was like the only point that I agreed w

RNA respiratory viruses tend to die in the stomach before they can spread elsewhere, so that's why eating out of to go containers is generally fine. Viruses work by replicating themselves in safe areas like the nasal passages, and a big vat of hydrochloric acid isn't exactly comfortable.

The other thing is that we've learned more about how the virus spreads; touching cardboard really doesn't bring back much in contact tracing. But it's easier to harp on about inconsistencies in guidelines than embrace complex realities brought on by a pandemic.

Its probably been going around for years TBH.

Yo... U could have chrones, and often u need a second or third opinion for them to actually diagnose it properly. Which could take years.

Theres no f***ing way they found patient zero like that, right away. Majority of ppl dont even have severe symptoms.

Big crowds in open air with plenty of masks is different to a packed club. Most of te spikes we've seen these past few months come from those situations

Not for years but for months.

Experts have researched when the first cases were in Europe and they suspect that the first case in France may have occurred in late October/early November.

Interesting. Glad countries are looking into it, rather than just taking china and the WHOs word for it.

Still, we've found ppl in canada, months ago, during the peak, who were immune to it. Their immune system could already fight it.

S*** isnt adding up to 100%.
