Really interesting Italian study of 4,300 (a huge number for a study) positive cases that were tracked and followed up with weeks later (i.e. these are not pre-symptomatic cases):

    arxiv.org/abs/2006.08471

The following percentages experienced symptoms, by age group:

    0-19y

Had Symptoms (respiratory or fever): 18.5%

    Critical (ICU/death): 0%

    20-39y

    Had Symptoms: 26%

    Critical: 0.47%

    40-59y

    Had Symptoms: 38%

    Critical: 0.88%

    60-79y

    Had Symptoms: 41%

    Critical: 4.5%

    80+

    Had Symptoms: 67%

    Critical: 18.6%

Take it for what you will, but it appears to be a sound and expansive study. All this really does is confirm what we've been told: get tested if you are likely to expose others to illness. There is a good chance you won't know how much you can affect others.

The biggest limitation of the study: only fever and respiratory symptoms were counted in the mild symptomatic section. So if for some reason you only ever had digestive issues, you get thrown in the asymptomatic pile. I would guess this is quite rare, but it happens. Respiratory symptoms and fever are by far the most common, so I don't think that delegitimizes the findings, only limits them.

Whether you know not, whether you like it or not, the Corona virus actually causes lung damage to asymptomatic persons
I used to be a hardcore Corona naysayer until I read this.

"One study looked at CT scans conducted on individuals aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship. In that case, 54% of 76 asymptomatic individuals showed significant subclinical lung abnormalities"

    Also

"For example, in a study of more than 3,000 prison inmates who tested positive for coronavirus, around 96% of those cases were asymptomatic."

Essentially half of the world population will have lung damage from this disease without knowing it, until they have to exert themselves.

I honestly think it got me. It has affected at least half of the population

The prison study is fascinating, 96% of individuals where asymptomatic. Where I work at has the highest per capita covid19 cases in the state of Virginia, yet we aren't dropping like flies, it all makes sense now.

This disease will never go away

"Findings from investigation and a***ysis of re-positive cases"

  • Bit of relatively good news, the 7 day moving average hasn’t been this low since March

Is this lung damage permanent, though?

I’m not a nay-sayer, but it’s important to understand what these results mean. They found opaque areas in the lung from a CT scan in one group (Diamond Princess). But that in itself doesn’t automatically equal long term lung damage. It could be a number of things:

    radiopaedia.org/articles/ground-glass-opacification-3?lang=us

Also, the study was more about asymptomatic people than the lung findings, so I wouldn’t be so quick to extrapolate the diamond princess findings to everyone who ever gets the virus considering they don’t even do that in the study

How are other states handling this? In Texas we beat the virus a while back but some people still wear the mask

This is something that needs to be highlighted more, even more than the deaths I think. People are too focused on “well I’m young so I won’t die” but it affects your lungs either way

We don’t know if it’s permanent damage at all. Basically they found abnormalities of the lungs of people currently with the disease with no symptoms. But we don’t know what these abnormalities are - if they go away, if they cause damage, if they cause permanent damage. All they found was hazy spots on a CT scan (term is ground glass opacities), which could be a number of things

i need to see some new reports out of China, they probably have a better understanding of the longer term effects.

Yeah, it’s definitely worth following. Especially because of it’s prevalence in asymptomatic people
