The news is gonna keep hyping up "variants" and other goofy s*** that happens with every virus until an acceptable number of people get vaccinated. This is no different than Fauci gradually moving up the percentage needed for herd immunity to "ease us into it". I personally think it's despicable to damage people's mental health further but it's the strategy they're going with, know it when you see it

I'm watching the variant stuff rn but won't let myself freak out until it's clear that these variants are actually impacting communities that are on the other side of a major spread.

For instance, the Brazilian variant is apparently in Minnesota and the South African variant is in the Carolinas. Can we see an increase in cases in those geographical areas? So far, we can't. Their downward trend matches any other fall after a surge. Minnesota reported one of their lowest case totals in months today.

Frankly, America is one of the slowest countries at identifying variants when they appear, so I'm sure if we're only just now discovering them, they've already proliferated. If the data doesn't show that they're cutting through areas with antibodies, there's no reason to panic yet.
