Psychoanalytic theory isn't just Frued and the theory has been refined throughtout the years.

the only time i hear psychoanalytic theory being mentioned in a positive light is with childhood development and the guy who made the stages less sexual, i'm forgetting the name of him right now. erikson maybe?

in my time studying i've only ever heard psychoanalytic theory in any breadth being recognised as freud "creating" talk therapy, and then mentioning how everything afterwards fell out because it wasn't empirical

are you practicing in psychology or did you just study?

Freud is the "grandfather" of psychoanalytic theory so of course he's going to be talked about the most.

And yea .. Erik Erikson and Karen Horney are the other popular psychoanalyst.

I'm a practicing therapist. My graduate degree is in social work though.

yeah i could definitely see that line of work having a more positive light on psychoanalytic theory. i may also be biased in the information i've been given since my uni is marketed as a research uni but even then there was a big shift towards more empirical theories dating back 40+ years ago and people distanced themselves from anything not supported. it's why everyone has a hardon for CBT because of how measurable it is

that being said i think psychoanalytic theory and freud are based but that's definitely a minority opinion i think

Most people who get therapy don’t really need it they jus need someone to talk to. All the ‘secrets’ therapists use to get u to realize stuff is available online

if you have a bad therapist, sure.

Exactly and that standardization for the sake of both efficiency and empirical validity is a big part of the problem imo

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy is based on stoic philosophy which teaches that essentially, it all comes down to perception of a thing rather than the thing itself

So perhaps it does reinforce capitalism, however this alone doesn't mean being tolerant of unfairness. Cbt teaches you that if you can rationally and reasonably respond to something then go ahead. Therefore it's not incompatible with seeking to improve society

Cbt is popular as it is cheap, works most of the time for mild and moderate cases, easily trained and doesn't take as long

    Jungian depth psychology tho>>>>

if you want the secret revealed, most of therapy's efficacy comes from client-patient relationship and trust and the therapy method isn't as important

Our whole health care system works on a medical model framework. And since the government and insurance companies are paying the salaries of most therapists, best believe they want your interventions to be evidenced-based.
