Cordae a flop nothing about him is huge
Nigga saw cordae and went off the rails lol I said they wanted him to be huge but it didn’t work.
Reminds me of that awkward phase in 2008-2010 hip-hop
A new sound will rise
You mean the era of prime Young Money, MBDTF, Eminem's comeback, and the beginning of the "blog era."
Nah...I can't cosign this at all. The past 2 years feels way more stagnant in the mainstream than that era. Indie scene is doing great though.
When Kendrick took over, there was no sign of someone like him coming along. Same for Drake. The game is stagnating a bit in terms of originality. Someone will seize the moment and take the crown. It’s always been that way.
The big dogs of the previous generation (Kendrick, Drake, and JCole) are aging and reaching the endpoints of their career arcs. Out of the new generation of rap, there is no one that comes close to leading the game like Drake or the other two on the massive international scale that they have. Lil Durk and Lil Baby are capped because of their lack of genuine versatility (ex. lil baby or durk cannot make a dancehall song that won’t sound like a reach). They are trying to find that next huge movement (again Durk, Baby, Cordae come to mind) but I don’t think they can be nearly as multi-faceted and rap itself has become way too fragmented with all these sub-genres. Will there ever be like a Drake, Kanye, Hov level rapper ever again? If you think there could, what would he even sound like? Everything under the sun has basically be done already and in this TikTok era clones are at an all time high.
Op typed all this to say nothing
And new SoundCloud generation is terrible. All of them seem inauthentic (think sofaygo, kankan, ken carson, yeat) with their flashing lean and guns. They remind you of those kids that were in band in high school but wanted to act street/cool after graduating lol.
Yeat fire summrs fire autumn fire etc. But yea not a huge Faygo/kankan fan and I definitely see what ur saying about the fake gang banging s*** it's mad forced/corny I jus hope they don't take it farther than they ready to
I mean, honestly bro? There was a point where we didn't have Drake, Kendrick, nor Cole and had greats like Ye who are still making music. Hov still does tracks with people. Em, despite how duplicitous his career has been: still makes music. Music honestly isn't a career form where people as big as these guys just walk away from it because they've invested too much of themselves into the art. They might chill out for awhile but they don't completely vanish while they're still able to create.
And we will definitely see artists that rise as big as they are sooner or later. Like I said, there was a point where we didn't have them, and you can remember that, and now we do.

the thing that kinda worries me is that a lot of people are just biting each other now

Blame the nature of playlist that only suggest s*** based on stuff you already like. Meaning in order for you to keep listening Spotify or AM will only suggest the same sound.

True. That is the current reference point for young artists.

I don't think there can be but there's still great rappers out there. every form of media, the world of entertainment as a whole is fragmented. Very few platforms are as Universal enough that a new "the Guy" can be put up and acknowledged on the level of previous generations. I think this is true even in pop.

not trying to derail your thread but XXXTentacion, Juice WRLD, Pop Smoke were gonna be icons for their generation. a lot of the kids today take themselves out the conversation too early

Do you think The Weeknd will slowly become like Em and gradually start making corny music despite his success?
