wholeheartedly agree.
tremendous amount of emotional heft on the part of the cast, helped salve over some dialogue and story.
have to run this back as a double feature with The Wrestler at some point.
At the end, did you come to the belief that Ellie was evil and not a good person? I’ve seen a lot of debate about her character and that she negatively impacted their viewing of the film. I thought it was a clear showcase of the consequence of his choosing to not be a part of his daughters life. He tried to find deeper meaning or justifications in her malicious intents like the first writing being a poem, or her sending the video of the young guy to his family, when it was clear she had close to nothing but hate in her heart. And yet, you could see the emotional turmoil she experienced seeing her father in his last moments.
Pay attention when you watch this film cause this is what will happen to you if you keep up eating those McRibs as much as you do
Worth it
Just got out, I really enjoyed it. While I’m not surprised Brendan is getting so much love, deservingly so with how much vulnerability his performance brings, I’m actually quite surprised by the supporting cast. Almost everyone is delivering incredible performances, Hong Chau in my opinion stood out just as much as Brendan. I can understand the story or dialogue leading to lower review scores as it can feel almost preachy, and the tone throughout is very pessimistic, but I think the positives definitely outweigh its negatives.

Everyone will be on Brandon Fraser’s nuts out of pity tho because he is kind of likeable and starred in many of our childhood-favourite movies but kind of washed now
Nothing but fax

Ellie had a hard heart. she's cold, harsh and manipulative in a fashion that teenagers can be at times but she carried an edge within her throughout the movie. it's easy to see why a segment of the audience reacted harsh towards her. she's an amalgamation of parental misguidance/abandonment + years of loneliness, resentment, her bad decisions x the miles that life adds to you. This isn't the daughter Charlie knew all those years ago - with the way everything went down, why would it be? there is enough narrative room for Charlie and the audience to see the possibility of good intentions in her.

that’s a great take on her character, I really enjoyed how honest and real of a portrayal it was. Her character has gone through so much pain and anger and pessimism before she is reintegrated into Charlie’s life, it would only make sense for her to feel the way she did about him. I think the marketing didn’t really showcase that part of her character and almost made it seem like it was an awkward but ultimately sweet reconciliation. I think even though she never really has a big change on heart, it’s still made very clear and reiterated she is a teenager and lashes out as a coping mechanism. Her mother only took that anger and hate at face value

trailer definitely played up more of a prolonged yet eventually teary reconciliation between father and daughter. magic of movie marketing. it would be an extended period of time, years before Charlie and Ellie found balance in their relationship. attempting to build this balance in their current conditions, in the span of a week, is wild. that's like rebuilding NYC with your bare hands in the middle of a snowstorm. it's flawed. it's noble. it's desperate. it's honest. it's human.
I thought this was great.
Internet people are absolutely delusional over this one with some of the takes I’ve seen.
Hey seriously speaking
Is there a way that Fraser doesn’t at the very least get an Oscar nod for this? I mean honestly thinking about him a win feels like a lock. I can’t think of a performance this year that was on this level, like being as objective as I can about it. It has the physical spectacle aspect and Fraser’s performance itself matches the hype
Like we had a lot of great movies and performances this year. But this stands out big time
watching this tonite w the homies confirmed.

I feel like Colin Farrell and Banshees in general has more momentum at this point

this is also how I perceived Ellie as a character. It seems Charlie was always so desperate for honesty from others because he knew his “optimism” could warp his own judgement of others, including Ellie.
dude he lives on the second floor
he’s never coming down from there wtf lol
