Comedy anything goes AS LONG AS IT'S FUNNY. (which was what the issue people had with some of Dave's netflix specials)
The reason The Closer was poorly received was because Dave Chappelle was on the defensive and damn near ranting for 45% of the special.
Whereas this was different where he was just delivering jokes without having to add extra angry sauce to it like he was on The Closer.

I did, and there’s a very real chance I interpreted it wrong…but the ways he “disagreed” with ye didn’t come off as actual disagreements to me. It came off as Chappelle telling ye he’s right but you just can’t say it out loud

You cannot explain away what he did, his vague ass defense makes no sense and was purely to save his ass because he knew how bad it looked. You can get away with a lot as a celebrity but there is a line and he went passed it.
