Thoughts?
i guess that's true in a sense but I wouldn't say that for the genre as a whole but for a select top tier of artists that are really striving to be great. so not including DDG. I think I understand what he means and why he said it.
Bollocks
Back in the days the rappers knew how to rap. Can't say the same about the young kids we hear about these days
Creatively? In a way yes.
But overall ? Definitely not.
You really don't need to be that good of a rapper nowadays to be poppin
The standards were much higher back then
Why do people always refer to the 20th century as ‘back in the day’ nigga it’s 2022 we gotta update this
Well when most of the creativity is in the beat I have to disagree
Sure they can make a cool sounding track but that will not make them better “rappers”
They gotta “rap” better
Old rappers never had the creativity to poorly rap over a drill remix of the iCarly theme song
Take away the studio effects and a lotttt of rappers today wouldn't have their current careers
That sounds like an oldhead statement, but its just facts
he’s right
there’s very little you can argue people haven’t gotten better at from decades ago
people just addicted to nostalgia and “things were better back in the day” syndrome

If you make the nostalgia argument then I could come back with the argument that you’re a prisoner of the moment. Of course newer stuff seems more creative than old stuff in the moment but in reality, the people who turned the turntable into an instrument are way more creative than people mixing rap with pop punk

They did have the creativity to literally invent sampling as we know it tho lmao
90s rappers are definitely better than rappers today they have a lot of pure talent and a lot of rappers today blow up from vibes or gimmicks
You had to know how to flow / write lyrics / perform now you don't have to do all that
Niggas aint even making songs like
Many men
Jesus walk
Stan
Hail mary
Crossroads
So I wouldn’t even say it’s more creative either

Harder to see it now but in the future we will view 2010s songs as classics
would have to disagree tbh, feel like rappers from the 90's and 2000's were more in love and enamored with hiphop as a culture and constantly wanted to impress each other with bars.
nowadays it's more about streams, sales, and rappers nowadays would rather be seen as rockstars and venture further away from hiphop.
Even if that’s true, he def shouldn’t be the messenger lol
It’s always niggas that’s not really that creative speaking on how much better rap is now
Today's rappers ain't even touching the Sugarhill Gang let alone guys like Rakim, BDK, Redman, Pun, or Kool G Rap minus a few outliers of course.
Today's rappers are more advanced musically though, even if there isn't much emphasis on lyrics or technical ability.

Nah they're definitely outrapping most of the 80's rappers
