Surprised nobody is f***ing with this heavy like that . I thought it was a near perfect movie
It’s still been on my mind. Definitely left an impact on me.
I do think the story could’ve been tighter but this still delivered the rawest vibe I’ve seen in a while, probably since The Northman. Delivering vibes this raw counts for a lot in my book.
I also found the cinematography, lighting, and colors to be pretty perfect in this. Type of movie I wouldn’t mind just throwing on in the background every now and again to appreciate the visuals. Seen a lot of complaints about the shaky cam but I didn’t have any issue with it, as others have said I think it added to the intensity.
I’ve been a fan of Dev Patel since Skins. Seeing him develop into a very talented actor, and now a talented director, has been great to witness. Monkey Man is a good debut for Patel as a director. It’s a simple revenge story filled with rich culture, great stunt work, and great camera work. An unexpected surprise for me was subplot about the trans women. I felt it was great representation within a film like this.
The pacing did slow down for a bit but when the action is on screen it’s a great watch. I’m definitely interested in seeing what Patel does next as an actor and director.

I just gotta find the time to go, looks like a must watch

thought it was the best action movie I seen in theaters in years outside of John Wick 4
this was great...some of the shaky cam during the action scenes coupled with the dark lighting made it hard to follow along with the chaos at times but I suppose that was by design...otherwise no complaints

Yeah the trans stuff was awesome and done in such a great way . They got to do some bad ass stuff in this movie too

I agree
For a directorial debut it was decent, the story was a bit messy & all over the place, a bit long but not all actors are this competent behind a camera especially on their first outing so I’m hoping for big things from him in the future
I spent a lot of time thinking that this film would maybe hit harder if I was Indian/ lived in India. Really felt like he made a movie for them, I mean how often do you see an Indian leading action star with an all Indian cast. Hope this sees a release and success there eventually
Definitely felt like the writing at times broached on topics and things that were interesting to say but never quite delivered anything on them beyond a surface level acknowledgement.

Seeing it tonight, I won't be that bad of a couch potato now that college basketball season is over.

Peele might be the goat, for touching on all these taboos
He didn't write the movie. The movie was already made when he got involved in the project
Looking for a fun action movie, where you can just sit back and admire the action and choreography without thinking too much. This it?
There's a lot to like but the directing held it back at some parts. Way too often I found myself frustrated with the close up shakey cam and wondering why Dev chose the shots that he did rather than more standard ways of filming a scene. I guess most of it was due to budget restrictions, but it was almost enough to pull me out of the movie sometimes.
At the end of the day I still really enjoyed it and think it's a cool, unique entry into the action genre. I'm glad Dev got to make the movie he wanted to and it doesn't look like he had to compromise. Great action sequences throughout, especially for a first time director. Can't think of a better case for giving an actor more leading roles than this.
And that knife scene was INSANE

yeah if anything Peele actually told em to not go as hard on the taboos as they did
This movie was honestly beautiful and I don't think I've ever described an action movie as that.
I liked this a lot. Love that Dev also pretty much closes the door on a sequel, bc I can’t wait to see him branch out as a director.
Also, am I insane or would this guy be perfect as a lead in a Nolan movie?
the part with the JID song playing reminded me of that scene from Slumdog Millionaire when they played Paper Planes
