I came into it hearing it was crazy and it was still one of my 10 favorite albums of that year, but looking back idk man
Like it’s essentially MBDTF status where it’s virtually impossible for there to be a more critically acclaimed project for the rest of the decade. It’ll prob be the gold standard (like it was at the time) for any aggressive or quirky female vocalists for the rest of the 20s. Idk if it SHOULD be that but it’s still a great project
A good Bob Dylan album was 3 points away on metacritic (98 vs 95) and Kendrick is the only artist I know of dropping this year that’s also in the top 10
Idk if it’s possible to pass up a 98, but it’s probably safe to say that Kendrick is the only active artist that has the critics behind him to do it
yes but I havent listened in over a year
idk what that really means but it seems relevant
I can’t stand how overhyped Shameika is
Decent song but way better ones on the record that deserve the attention like Cosmonauts
my biggest problem with the album is how it was recorded actually
The live versions of these songs have so much more energy than the studio versions
Pitchfork and other reviewers tried to make it something it's not. It's still a good Fiona record, but it's no day one classic.

The meme about this being the “white woman TPAB” is really accurate
This album just sounds like millenial standup comedy to me
Zoey DeChanel ass album
I could name a million female singer songwriter albums that do more for me personally than Fetch the Bolt Cutters ever will

you really just have 0 taste across the board, huh?
like the same niggas who are d*** riding Yeat tooth and nail, all of the sudden have these extreme pretentious requisites for Fiona Apple’s work that can’t match their newly found standards
I dont get the hype of the album it doesnt slund all that to me and im a person that does like "out the box" and "artsy" music.
I dont get it. I tried to get into it a few times but its one of those times i feel completely disconnected.

It wasnt just reviewers
anyways, it definitely was blown way out of the water imo, but the album is very good, and i’d argue for it being a masterpiece honestly. it has brilliant songwriting, (rack of his, cosmonauts, relay, i want you to love me, ladies) her singing is obviously gorgeous, and it’s very unapologetically her which gives the entire project an air of authenticity (ya know, mentioning her rape/trauma bombastically) to it that isn’t really matched by other albums. it’s packed with a lot of emotion and a ton of catharsis from her as well that i can’t help but appreciate
i’d also say it gets a boost for her producing it herself but that’s something that’s only reserved for kanye for whatever reason, so never mind

i genuinely don’t know where this narrative of this album being extremely out of the box or artsy comes from
like there isn’t really anything about it where im like “huh, that’s some wildly experimental unconventional s***”

Fam I’m saying this as I’m listening to the album

I agree 1hundred percent after i heard it, but thats what people acted like & pretended you needed to be that "type of person" to "get it". Well i am that type of person to an extent (i genuinely fux with s*** like The Swans, Godspeed, Dean Blunt, Arca etc.), but came out of it even more confused.
Doesnt help i wasnt familiar with her beforehand. I do think the discourse around the project did hurt it for those outside the circle.
Yeah honestly it did. It's not as good as Idler Wheel IMO but that's in my top 50 ever and it's pretty unrealistic to expect anything that good.
