i just did this video essay on guitar hero, how it came to be and also how it affected the artists in it, big and small
what im curious about with yall is did it send you down a path of listening to more guitar based music as a kid? did you not care? did you pick up a guitar because of it?
I was literally thinking about this the other day. you could definitely argue that the decline of rock music coincided with the death of these games, I’ll give this a watch when I’m not busy cause this looks interesting

real! yea it could be connected. tbh i think the guitar hero phenomenon probably prolonged rock music in a meaningful way, encouraging kids to listen to older bands without their parents pushing it on them, and maybe even encouraging them to pick up a guitar
i think the series died because of the corporations that got involved not really knowing how to prolong it beyond a cash out
I definitely was starting to listen to a lot more rock when 3 came out. The setlist was insane. It put me on ALOT of bands like RATM and Tenacious D too.
Also I’ll remember GH3 being one of the first times I trusted the process and became better as I kept playing. Before I was failing Slow Ride before they got to the verse
I think Guitar Hero 3, the Sonic Adventure series (franchise as a whole), and San Andreas are the games that have affected my music taste as a kid.
I have vivid memories of learning about Sonic Youth and Chuck D because of Kool Thing being in GH. Those games opened the door to more open mindedness for me. Prior to that I mainly knew Rap, pop and R&B cause thats what we listened to at school, I wasnt really into the Scene Kid stuff going on at the time or the Pop-punk wave before
When the Rock Band drum set dropped I knew I had to make music

I was blown away by RATM like damn I ain’t know guitars could make those sounds

Once they made a whole game for Aerosmith it was clear as day they were in too deep
Me and my older cousin used to play this a lot, I found out about so many songs and s*** through this at the time.
My cousin unfortunately passed away at a young age due to cardiac arrest
I will always remember him whenever I see Guitar Hero anywhere
Rock band more so for me
I already knew the songs on there but it certainly adds a ton of nostalgia to those songs for me
Oh definitely, that and Rock Band put me on to a lot of bands and f***ed up my canon - made me think s*** like Dragonforce and Ratt were a big deal for a little

That's insane lol
That's insane lol
i mean only at like #85 but still crazy. it really makes you wonder what the guitar hero craze would have been like with modern social media
I think we forget that those songs were already prevalent. They were used in ads, were big as ringtones, and classic rock radio was ubiquitous. The games def reinforced it for my gen specifically though. And parents were def easily persuaded by it.
Compare it to the dance games like DDR and Just Dance. None of that s*** stuck despite us being extremely impressionable at the time. Rasputin and I'm Han Solo ain't it.
And I still liked rap better despite DJ Hero being a huge failure.
