I think we forget that those songs were already prevalent. They were used in ads, were big as ringtones, and classic rock radio was ubiquitous. The games def reinforced it for my gen specifically though. And parents were def easily persuaded by it.
Compare it to the dance games like DDR and Just Dance. None of that s*** stuck despite us being extremely impressionable at the time. Rasputin and I'm Han Solo ain't it.
And I still liked rap better despite DJ Hero being a huge failure.
definitely, they were around but for once it was the kids choosing it vs the kids being forced to listen by their parents / in ads whatever. kids were actually shreddding
dj hero was also pretty fun but i remember thinking it was too easy as a kid lol

I knew kids who were named after the members in ACDC. My best friend's dad was obsessed with Kiss.
Idk, my dad got me into rap. When you're really young you aren't rebellious. That comes later.
They need to bring this wave back, we live in the fcking AI/social media era and this sh*t could make billions

theres a cool community of people who play it to this day but yea that level of phenomenon is tough to pull off now. i think culture might be too segmented for something this universal again
I was playing last night and yeah it definitely did . I had very little exposure to music outside of Houston hip hop so rock band and guitar hero helped me get into bands like the Dead Kennedys , nirvana and modest mouse

Loved this game so much
I always thought rock was for old white people before guitar hero 3 but playing it made me realize how good a lot of the songs are
I’d say it had about the same effect as most licensed track video games had on my tastes which isn’t to sell it short of its influence. Just that games with licensed tracks in general outside guitar hero heavily shaped my tastes
Absolutely it did.
F***ing guitar hero 3 soundtrack is amazing and shaped my taste as a kid. This was before i knew how to discover new music myself.
Fortnite festival teaching kids music now
Jet set radio had a greater musical influence than GH. By that time I was transitioning to more mature alternative music than the basic rock they had on there
I discovered Butthole Surfers and Primus through them as an impressionable teen and I've had brain damage ever since
Absolutely it did.

Then why are you never in my Bloc Party threads? Poser
Not a huge amount because I was already heavy into dad rock and s***
But gh/rb led me to getting into bands like system of a down, queens of the stone age, rage against the machine, afi, muse, the killers, etc
Looking at the tracklists right now is making me think it affected my taste a lot actually

This is only sort of true bc not every song in those games was a huge smash
