The answer to threads like these is virtually always rap is nuanced and all artists are different
man listen, it's too many mfs trying to argue instead of trying to shift s***
People only saying no cuz when they think of the word BARS they automatically think of Logic tier rap
They matter. Not everyone has to be a Kendrick Lamar to have bars. There was actually a lot more beat riders during the early 10's. These niggas now got hard beats AND they can rap.
Listen to Pooh verse on this. It's hard asf, he spitting, it's just not super complicated which is okay.

Do ig caption-worthy lyrics matter? Do chant-worthy hooks matter? Do you need to say s*** that makes the listener go “oooh that’s real”? Does resonating or relating to matter?
There’s your answer. It does not do to look at ‘bars’ like a monolith. It’s not all about being swag less in music videos and spitting super multisyllabic sweet nothings over a boombap beat with a wannabe Em voice
Questions like these are rooted in longstanding anti-southern bias in hiphop discourse

Bars most certainly still matter
But mainly within the street rap circle
That’s not to say that there still ain’t some very uninspired lyrical dookie out there tho
Nahh, bars still matter
but today's flows are so dazzling it's hard to even focus on words. A flow is only a flow no matter what, but today's artist are mixing that with substance and getting away with murder
that's why it seems like bars don't matter but if you pay attention a few artist still incorporate them. Gunna is having good bars at times, kevin gates always has bars, lil baby is cool with bars, thug used to be barred up etc. so yeah it's there just not as PROMINENT
Gunna be coming with some impressive little bars sometimes for real. Another person who’s slept on lyrically is Chief Keef

Kodak got bars frfr
Bars have never been the only thing that mattered, its around as important as it's always been as in there's so much more you could focus on as an artist but if you want that to be your main thing then go for it
IG/Twitter caption bars are the new bars
This is true, Wayne, Big Sean and Drake changed the definition of bars going forward
Bars hold the same place they always have in hip hop. Mainstream hip hop artists are getting more attention than ever and, a lot of people including people that claim to be rap fans are acting like whatever Travis Scott releases is the cutting edge of the genre. When that's just not the case.

- BRAVE"anti-southern bias in hiphop discourse"
what bias yall just say anything 😭😭
yes and no, ofc if you got really trash bars, the production can even sound off to some people and the whole s*** is trash, unless it meshes well
nah we need this discussion
but what's even more crazy
they got a category at the grammys that reads "BEST MELODIC RAP whatever"
s*** crazy
they changed rap sung performance to melodic rap because rap and sung collabs rarely happen.
that year they also changed a category from urban contemporary to "progressive rnb" 💀💀
Does having metaphors and similes in your songs matter nowadays?
It feels like for some time they have been forgotten but when you look at the top selling artist in the game they do still have some metaphors in their songs
On the other hand you can just make good music without having bars now just on how you say things and your sound but is it something listeners look for anymore in rap?
people literally just want to hear someone talking to them. rappers as musicians are like comedians on podcasts
