I feel you but it is kinda connected still because the southern style has taken over, so if the answer is no then it could be attributed to that change

I don’t really think the casual fan was ever looking for bars like that

This is a little deeper than that, southern hip hop is just so much different from original hip hop that it was always gonna be controversial with people who are coming from a different understanding. Mainly just the south being simpler lyrically than people had come to expect from hip hop

I think its also important to differentiate between melodic rap and just flat out singing. Cause some of these "rappers" just singing most of the time

It’s hip hop of course bars matter. The type of bars tho is different. Rap without bars is like rock with no guitars

I really wouldn’t even contribute the south to the change honestly they always had bars but in their own style

but I can see why ppl would think that because of the southern club bangers

    Nahh, bars still matter

but today's flows are so dazzling it's hard to even focus on words. A flow is only a flow no matter what, but today's artist are mixing that with substance and getting away with murder

that's why it seems like bars don't matter but if you pay attention a few artist still incorporate them. Gunna is having good bars at times, kevin gates always has bars, lil baby is cool with bars, thug used to be barred up etc. so yeah it's there just not as PROMINENT

Trap autotune stuff is a south thing, that’s what replaced traditional “bars”, without the south none of this happens. Basically any change in hip hop since around 2010 can be attributed to the south. And the majority of new rappers have bars in their own style too.

  • Melody may be more prioritized in the mainstream

Yeah but at the core, he can rap rap. He has good lyrics.

    XXX could spit too.

And interviews they both have betted that lyrics still matter and they care about bars

Look at Lil yachty trying to be taken serious now but he came out saying bars don't matter so now he's in the position he's in trying to prove himself but nobody cares.

they got shat on when LA was on top with death row

they get shat on now when the south has been the tastemaking region for nearly 3 decades

The people who you would think don’t care about bars actually pride themselves in it quite a lot. S*** even carti said WLR was supposed to be all about bars, uzi was rapping all over EA. Kodak came out of jail with no autotune just spitting
