Just wondering. I was born 2 and a half months premature and, as a result, I’ve had a speech impediment my whole life. It’s nothing too bad, but I do have to use filler words such as “uhh” or “um” to get past particular words or letters that I’ll stumble on.

For instance, I work at a call center, and instead of saying “thank you for calling” I say “wireless help desk” because the T will cause me to stutter & have a block. My stutter makes me have short pauses that can last up to 5-10 seconds, depending on how anxious I am.

It used to cause me a lot of anxiety especially when giving speeches in college & high school.

However, with the help of therapy, I’ve realized the beauty in my stutter & realized it’s made me a much better listener & empathetic person. It’s very easy to place myself in someone else’s shoes and relate to them.

Anyway, just was curious if anyone else has fluency issues or if it’s just me on the site

Nice! Is it something you struggle with daily or just when you get nervous?

Interesting! Have you ever gotten clowned for it or do you just let it rock? Does it make you self conscious at all?

I appreciate it but I feel like stuttering only wins if you get self conscious about ir. If you start boldly looking people in the eye still, even after the stutter is happening, it shows confidence & then the stutter will relieve itself once you’re more comfy. At this point, I straight up tell a chick “I have a speech impediment” & sometimes that encourages the girl to open up to me about her insecurities or flaws

Oh, wow!!! How was it when you were a kid? Did you realize what was going on? Did your dad have to explain it to you? How interesting!!!

one of my best friends in school talked very, very fast and stuttered when he read aloud

he was an immigrant and spoke 4 languages fluently by the age of 15, yet the people who laughed at him could barely speak one

he moved back to morocco right before our graduation, i hope he’s doing well

Most people I talk to probably find it weird however this one girl I'm talking to doesn't seem to mind.

The only way I'll stop is if I'm buzzed, or if I'm very comfortable with the person and talk for a long time.

It's mostly anxiety, I think. I was used to stutter WAY WORSE in elementary school.

Funny thing is remember only the last bit of my speech class and they said I was satisfactory and I left it in like what 1st or 2nd grade?
