Right. There some revisionist history going on in this thread. Tons of the popping female rappers were getting accused of being plants, including ice spice and sexxyred. Ice spice especially. I don’t know if that happened in this site though.
Besides that, doechii is a refreshing artist has been releasing music for a while. Also she’s signed to a major label so it’s their job to get her in as much eyes as possible.

Revisionist history and group think is what majority of this site is nowadays

    WHAT

You could gauge organic reactions way better back then, and wasn't so one sided on the artistic spectrum at that time. Vs someone like Doechii, where you can feel the aggressive marketing push on social media, with very little real world gauge on her popularity

Man, Prince had to go off on MTV execs, basically by himself, at a f***ing music video convention, to get them to play his videos back then in the early-mid 80s. He was on the verge of being a popstar, what you think a rapper had?

at that time, rappers had being a new genre so acts like public enemy were getting a f***ing push that in 2024, any acts that even would dare even think about being just a tad political would NEVER get lmaooo

exactly lol. and no disrespect to shorty but ice spice is borderline unlistenable lol. no charisma, no variety, no bars, no stage presence.

makes it even more obvious that the industry was pushing her SO hard. same could be said for every white boy of the month these past few years

they finally push somebody that sounds like they deserve the push and niggas mad

like you said, we know why tho

Ice Spice makes fun stuff but her debut album really showed how undercooked she is artistically tbh, s*** didn’t have a lot going for it in all honesty

  • Dec 21, 2024

I'm just more interested in why some of yall choose who to throw these labels on and who not to cause legit everything being said can apply to damn near every artists of the last 20 years ESPECIALLY since the streaming era

Hell the last mass "organic" come up I can remember in rap was during the the SoundCloud era and eventually the labels got their hands on that too

I saw doechii pack out a whole crowd at columbia university a year ago man

Back in 2012 it was a bit different, they didn't have social media like that. Kendrick got the same push, he was on SNL performing Swimming Pools and probably every mainstream media platform.

Kinda sad that there'll never really be another Kendrick Lamar/GKMC situation. Mainstream media wasn't anywhere near checking for Kendrick, even when Swimming Pools dropped, only rap circles were checking for his (major label)debut. Then GKMC leaked, the music and message just hit hard, it transcended Hip Hop cause of how great it was, and how it had people talking about it.

Back then, I knew an album was a classic/transcendent when street/trap guys, or white kids, were checking for new Kanye/Kendrick/Wayne, cause the media told them "this is the pinnacle of Hip Hop. You can argue TPAB, but GKMC just felt like the last rap album to make people really pay attention and respect Hip Hop as an artform, not another music genre trying to sale itself into oblivion.

i just feel like there’s already an overwhelming amount of rappers that just make fun music and so many of them do it better than her lol

her delivery alone is enough for me lmao

she constantly sounds like she’s just trying to rap for the first time in her life lol

Not to sound like one of those people on twitter, but this thread specifically was only made because she's a woman

We have here people discussing a bunch of irrelevant male rappers than spawned out of nowhere with s***ty music, but Doechii has been dropping music for a few years now, building an audience, got signed to a major label in 2022 and now she's getting bigger on mainstream and suddenly it's "inorganic"

PE was in the right market(NY) at the right time. Def Jam being mostly a rap label at the time, couldn't afford to many losses, so they really had to believe in PE and their music. In 2024, I doubt any execs know what to believe at this point, they just know what sells, and if you do what sells, your gonna be put on, as long as you keep selling.

Think it was slightly different with Kendrick because he had a body of work prior to Swimming Pools. Like he actually had a pretty dedicated and sizeable following off OD and Section.80.

Now one can say that was a result of the blog era and artists going on college campus tours. Something that you don't really get much of these days. But from what I remember at least, people heard of Kendrick Lamar before Swimming Pools.

  • i think she’s a damn fine artist and have been waiting for this blow up since i heard her on Wat U Sed by zay

Great music should cross over, not be boxed in. Special albums achieved that

exactly this. They aren’t high on her and because of that they don’t understand why others are.
