Her aesthetic rebrand was probably the thing that helped her the most. The Doechii from 2019-2020 was way less palpable to mainstream audience. She was considered too weird I mean s***, I remember back then when people were saying she was like a fusion of Rico Nasty and Azealia Banks lol
Definitely organic. After years of honing her craft, she put out a great project with a clear, engaging aesthetic and a fantastic feature on Tyler's album. You can chalk it up to right place, right time, but clearly not out of nowhere.
Think it was slightly different with Kendrick because he had a body of work prior to Swimming Pools. Like he actually had a pretty dedicated and sizeable following off OD and Section.80.
Now one can say that was a result of the blog era and artists going on college campus tours. Something that you don't really get much of these days. But from what I remember at least, people heard of Kendrick Lamar before Swimming Pools.
Doechii has all that too. Labels investing in artists that take their craft seriously and didn't blow up through short-lived memes or viral moments is a great thing.
You might be blinded a bit by nostalgia. Sure people knew who Kendrick was, but he had all of Dre and Interscope behind him for his debut.

This new aesthetic is probably her least engaging and probably her safest when compared to what she was in the past honestly. That's probably the biggest reason why she's finding so much success now. Along with the obvious major label backing/push.

He had Dre and other West Coasts acts behind him before his debut...
"You might be blinded a bit by nostalgia"
No...it's quite literally just telling you what s*** was like for him back then lmao
Not to sound like one of those people on twitter, but this thread specifically was only made because she's a woman
We have here people discussing a bunch of irrelevant male rappers than spawned out of nowhere with s***ty music, but Doechii has been dropping music for a few years now, building an audience, got signed to a major label in 2022 and now she's getting bigger on mainstream and suddenly it's "inorganic"
people make posts all the time calling male rappers plants what do you mean lmao

He signed with Aftermath/Interscope following S80
He signed with Aftermath/Interscope following S80
And was still getting features from big name West Coast acts and placements on their albums, tapes, and singles prior to that.
You know Wikipedia exists and has this information that is organized and easy to find correct?

Kendrick/TDE was the darling of blog rap back then, forsure. But his come up came off of a different metric then now. Swimming Pools was big, and it got pushed because of it, but alot of rap fans at the time thought Kendrick was gonna release a basic debut(which would've probably still be good for the time)but he blew expectations away, and that quality lives on in his brand till this day.

Imma be real I still get confused when niggas say GKMC was Kendrick's debut cause I've known about him for 2-3 years before that and knew Section 80 as his debut lol it just throws me off

When did Kenny work with Dre before GKMC?
You think singing to Dre in 2012 was comparable to getting some random west coast feature on a tape?
S80 was a cool album. He singed on the dotted line and dropped one of the biggest rap albums of all time lmao.
I swear the term “industry plant” burnt KTT out. I think it started wit that Raury nigga

GKMC is his major label debut, Section 80. was an indie release through TDE. I think people didn't count it as a real album at the time cause it didn't release physically.
And you completely looked over the fact that Doechii had music out and fans prior to being signed, just like Kendrick.

It had physical releases through their website but yeah it was still an indie release. I remember it being marketed as a “independent album” and GKMC as his major label debut

It's semantics at the end of the day. Yeah GKMC was his first major label album, but that doesn't change that S80 was his debut album, regardless of it being an indie release or having physical copies.

Not once was that overlooked. I've been saying that throughout this thread.
F***ing read nigga.

Dumb f***.

Yea, it had an online release physically, but those physicals are kinda hard to find in good condition. S.80 and Habits And Contradictions, were huge blog rap albums though.

Yep, but "Major Label Debut" meant something back then. You weren't just releasing a collection of songs with your debut album at the time, you were preparing to make your first big impression to a wide, more mainstream audience.
Tampa was already f***in with her before she signed, she's been grinding and making good music for years. I'd say she deserves it.
