when OP specified "pop" I figured we were going from BBTM forward.
anything pre-BBTM is better than 24K Magic IMO for sure.
Yeah, I mean there's a decent argument 24k Magic could be R&B too. I usually just use pop to mean meant for mass appeal, the distinction between Pop/R&B seems arbitrary a lot of the time

that's what i figured. idk maybe mainstream is a better descriptor. "pop" is always a controversial thing.
Weeknds pop s*** sounds soulless when u put it next to bruno
This tbh.. this boy needs to stop writing chapters and write a whole new book called "I'm not as good as i think i am"
The Weeknd is the most streamed artist of 2020 and Blinding Lights is literally bigger than any Bruno song ever. What are you on about?
I dont even see how.. blinding lights is so f***ing boring
I dont even see how.. blinding lights is so f***ing boring
To say I don't understand why the song is as big as it is would be an understatement
something as derivative as 24km doesn't touch abel's weaker pop albums let alone AH.
if yall prefer tribute acts, just say that
The weeknds pop albums are literal throw backs to 80s synth pop
To say I don't understand why the song is as big as it is would be an understatement
Makes sense tbh
Not a lot of good radio music this year by artists that also get streams and get playlisted, so it kinda fills that niche
Bruh y’all niggas really think The Weeknd wants to be Bruno Mars y’all delusional as f***.
I don’t see Weekend strutting on stage with 4 niggas doing a whole dancing number.
Let both of them be great at their own s*** Jesus Christ
Crazy 24k miles better with just 9 songs
that's part of the reason. and i think that's what people mean when they bring up the "death" of albums and sequencing and all that.
bruno probably made a bunch of records but the real work is laboring over what to cut it and make it a manageable runtime that makes you want to play the album in full over and over. gotta give him that credit. niggas just making playlists and compilations now.

Uptown Funk is a p dope song to be fair, but songs like Versace on the Floor, 24k magic or Thats what I Like are excruciatingly boring. Most of Brunos music to be fair is terrible. Just some exceptions here and there but his obsession with the 80s just makes him look like a copycat artist with nothing to say.
Blinding Lights is def one of my least fav songs on After Hours, but its a fun song to sing and I still like the instrumental with how it makes 80s synthpop feel so haunting. Decent song imo.

Ok tbh Bruno has an advantage over Abel with most of his pop records but After Hours killed all that. After hours to me is Weeknds most mature album and I personally think it’s better than any Bruno album.
Abel tries to be Bruno, but he throws in some pretentious promo about how he doesn't watch movies, he watches FILMS at the CINEMA and dorks eat it up
You’re right, but it does lend more depth to his sound, enough to offset the pop cheese. Bruno is pure blind ignorant pop cheese with one classic album (24). To me after hours is also abel’s only classic, but he also has a classic mixtape and much more memorable hit music.
Bruno begging to be a billionaire is relatable, catchy, and honest, but also clownish. When you’re not in your feelings, that song some weirdo s***.
Songs like reminder and can’t feel my face are tactful classic.
This is how seriously ppl take Bruno

i hear you. i have to dig in more to the songwriting of After Hours. i really don't listen to it at all apart from the title track and Escape From LA. you talking the album as a whole, or are there some key tracks you saw that growth? (in regard to lyrics/songwriting)
This thread got me thinking about what a pop album is, check this out if you’re interested

!https://youtu.be/sn8KYD1Vco0uhhhhhhhh what's happening here? Candy is a timeless classic. Black people take that record very seriously. If you not two-steppin' or lining up to electric slide to this at the cookout then we looking at you funny
maybe you should've linked Rick Astley or something cause this a bad example lol

Interesting
What's the dividing line between Pop and R&B then? A lot of music that gets called R&B relies on traditional song structure

Just say you hold Abel to a different standard and go lmao

Do u want me to disrespect Bruno? The nigga makes heaters. But he’s disco, while able is way more dynamic.
Versace on the floor came for Abel’s whole discography with a single blow.
But high for this almost puts Bruno back in his clown box.
Candy is a f***in classic, but it ain’t Whitney, dog. Not saying Abel vs Bruno is that lopsided, but one guy is closer to whitney while the other is closer to cameo. Not bad places to be for anybody.
What i will say about Bruno is he makes coke music sound like a fun night out with friends while weeknd makes it look like a DARE commercial sometimes.
